MAKE HOME ATTRACTItfe
/>f the cities, are always doing good
jvprk, the value.of wbith carftiardly
be overestimated, in warning the
youth of the county homes of the.
/jsk ,tjiey run in rushing to towns and '
large ciqMi, ; where they
£oo often have to eke out a miserable
.existe. ce or suffer absolute want.
By way of preventing calamity,
is well to look at its cause. Now
.what is the attraction to youngsufcn
in large cities T They are simply
and dazzled by what
lhey see and hear- 1M ss is one ot
the firstjhings that a tracts and se
cures attention : then comes all the
fascinations of places of amusement,
jand the possibiliiy.of great wealth,
which so few, after all attain. These
.things contrast strikingly with the
jjife of many country homes where
young men and young women (who
till experience teaches thsrp can see
only the bright side of city are
.mere dredgers— *• hewers of wood
/ind draweis of wale//’ Yes, we
jsay diudges, whose lives are no
; hi ter than the poorest drny horse.
Now, it wont .do, for £ress jnd,
Tiilpit to preach to such people that
£heir condition will; be injured bv
poming to the cities ; for in fact with
some ot them it has my oh improved ;
yet it is well known that the youth
of the country have ru-died to the
( ei ies till various kids of trades and
professions se«y likely to be overs
crowded, and hence come want,
poverty, hunger and dirt, suicide and
other crimes too horrible to mention.
The reader may now naturally ask,
What is the refnody. ? Tne answer
is simple (nough. Let home be
made attractive By culture of mind
and heart as well ns soul. Daily
and study toil, without r.daW tion,
breaks down hotly .and mint!. Bti'
it will be said we have ti/work like
slaves to live. No doubt many start*
itig with little fT'tinjtcapital in a new*
.country, have hard work and great
privations to undergo, whh h unfit
their minds lor efloit ; but there are
.the wintt r evcf.ir.gs when the farm
er and l,is family surround their own
fireside to cultivate tli<! affections and
Jmprove the iy|tid. Health, temper
ance ajjd well directed industry,
poon secure to even the poorest in
\rur fhvbn and ndtid a comfoi table «»n*
peiency. T’hen hy degiees hunv* can
be made happy by the proper man
agement of a fiuitful soil. It will
yield not only what is necessary to
jstrstnirt Me crimfortable, but pleas
ures also to graitfy the most gifted
minds. They of all otheis, who till
the soil, come into the closest rela
tions with Nature. All the sciences
are more or less connected with the
soil. There is no lack of food fi>r
the mind and body. Tfius, while
we havean enlightened mind, so long
will the noting men of the country
flee from the music of nature to the
pities’ din, to drag out perhaps a
miserable existence into exacting to ; l
of traders, who are but the agents
of the tilleis ot the soil. L-l us
have enlighteni and agricu’tute. and a
more equal distribution of wealth
niu-t necessarily follow the producer
and the consumer/, they will #then
shake hands, the farmer will wear hs
smooth coat as the merchant and be
at lea-tas well t and mated : and above
all, his relation will be directly with
the Giver of all good, who never
cheats ljis children. Thus his home
will be enriched and made happy
and beautiful.
If all this be true of those with
little means, how much more quick
ly can it be reached by’ those who are
better off?
fcltioy a hard-handed farine has
his lauds all paid lor, plenty of mon
ey at interest, and yat not only de
nies his family but himself the nec
essaries of life. Such people are
pot ihe benfaoiors of their race. It
is they who drive the young men
and maidens to the cities, who rob
the soil of God’s bounty, taking all
they can get and putting nothing
back, and who wring fiom their off
springs their very hears blood, and
thus exile them from their homes
if such they cut! be called, to whith
er lhey know not. While the hard
handed farmers squeeze out the life
blood of the young, and cultivate
net*tier mind.nor soil, so long will
the young flee from the homes of
their fathers. Through this bright
gord land—file hoiqe of the weary
and oppressed of all nations—many
people especially in the Western and
North-western States, have air. ady
not only the necessaries, but the
Juxuries of life.
Few, if any, till the a >il intelli
gently. For the most pari the soil
is robbed, but a sad day of reckoning
will cojpe if tbs lasts. It has aft
ready come to Virginia, and it will
pogje to her sister States, if the ap
plication of useful knowledge io ag-
be -neglected. We look
jor belter results. General educa
tiqq will settle the question ; and if
flie tillers of the grqund will be true
to it and themselves, all that we can
wish will follow. The young will
then Stay at home, enjoying all the
blessings that can come fiQtn a fruit
ful soil.— Ten and, Ploiv.
Fob Beb Stings A correspond

writes as follows;
Qn the 15th of April last, a young

the Gardener’s Magazine for 1872.
I recommended him to apply the

is of more value than gold to all who

Tooth-Ache Curb.—All sufferers
from tooth-ache or neuralgic affl c

stanianeous and permanent, by sat

or wool with a strong pollution of
ammonia, and applying it immedi.

How to Remove Grease Spots.
—Mix calcined magnesia or carbon

and add pure benzole, s > that it is
just moist——not sufficiency wet to

granular mass, which by pressure
shows some.liquid benzole. Keep
it in a wide mouthed bottle ready for
use. This is first tubbed over the
oilyspot, which, when fresh, will at
once disappear, if old anew quanti

to dry till the benzole evaporates,
when the magnesia is cleared away
as above. Fabrics which can bear

To Exterminate Rat.—A cor*
respondent of the.New York Tri
bune, writing from Arkansas, gives
the following remedy for rats: ‘Take
onperas, the quantity to depend up
on the number of buddings or places
infested, pulverize it very fine, and
be sure and sprinkle some in all their
holes, in the corn crib, under all the
buildings, io a word wherever they
congregate, and in a few days all
the rais will be gone. This is very
simple and easily tried, and has been
proved completely successful several
times at different places, No rais
seen in three days after a thorough
application.’
The Difference between “Go”
and “Come.” —“lf you want your
business done.” says the proverb,
“go and do it! If you don’t want
it done, send someone else.”
An indolent gentleman had a free
hold estate producing about Jive
hundred a year. Becoming involv
ed in debt, be sold hall the estate
and left the remainder to an industri
ous farmer for twenty years 1
About the end of the term, the
farmer called to pay his rent and
asked the owner if he would sell his
farm.
“Will you bay it?” asked the
owner, surprised.
“Y< 8, provided we can agree upon
the price.”
“Tint is exceedingly strange,”
observe the gentleman. Fray tell me

reply; “you sat still and said go ! I
