A TRIP TO THE OLD CAPITAL.
Messrs. KditorS: Thinking per

who have n»i had the privilege ol
visiting Mdledgevi'le since Sherman’s
vandals pas-e 1 through that place,
would 1 ke to AnoKv something of
Its present appearance and condi

sketch of what and who I saw.
Arriving on the 11 o’clock p. in.,
M. & A. It. It., we were landed out
in the cold half a mile from the city,
but f>rtunitcly vfr re met by what
they cull in t >at country a hack,
which after a while lan led us at
McComb’s Ho l el, the proprietor, of
which is a very clever and acco n»
fnotlaling gentleman. After break
fast, on the morning of the 25th nit.,
inv friends and my ,elf, without a
guide, start'd up to the old Stale
House, which stands on top of the
hill in front ol the hotel. Not as
in for i er times was it necess.ry for
us to g > to the gatrsfor admission,
for the tence aromid the Capitol be
ing dcstioyed, there is no particular
places of entrance. The old bu dd

same app?arance as in former diys,
but the ins de has suffered terribly
at the hands o! tbe ruthless invaders.
The walls are shamefully delated,
and the frescoeing a'inost totally and

The seiits ad desUs in both hall s
have been removed and ilestr>yp,|
nnd now the only purl ol the b'uil<J-.

taking a bird’s eye view of the city
and surround.ng ci unity ff ,m the
observatory on the top < / the Capi

surpassed by the viewß ‘‘up the

of the mountains su rounding the
valley of Virginia.
