A RUNAWAY^AND jSMASH UP
Two Young Men Thrown from a Buggy
and Badly Hurt.
Messrs. W. J. Letiice and To’*e
Clark, two young men clerking in
Mr. Wilkin’s stor , hired a horsp an I
buggy on Sunday last ;o take a
ride. They were driving down
Broad street when one ol the
ehackles came loos** and one si le ol
the shalts fell on the horses heels,
lie became badly frightened and
started to run, jerking the buggy
around very suddenly. Mr. "Clark
was thrown from his seat and had
his collar bone broken and was pretty
badly stunned. Mr. Lettice was
driving and ol course was doing his
best to stop the animal, which soon
became unmanageable and he had
nut gone far before he too was
thrown out and falling on his back,
was pretty badly hurt, but he was
able to attend to business on Mon
day morning. Mr Clark had his
collar bone set on Monday, ad was,
at last accounts, doing very wel'.
It is hoped he may not have any
serious irttuble with his wounds,
but that be may soon recover. Ti.e
buggy was t»«dy smashed up against
a tr*e, on the sidewalk, and the
horse freed himself and went back
to the stable.
Mors Stealing.
On Saturday night last M-s*. Hop
kins A Little hail more goods stolen
from theT counter. Suspicion rest
ed on Jake Thomas and his wife and
the wagon in which they came to
town was sea'ched and a portion of
'he goods were found, together with
a large roll of homespun which had
been taken from Mes-rs. F. A.
Sinquefield A Co’s sioie without
being paid for. Owing to the fact
of the woman having a young baby
witli one < r two other small children
at home, she was allowed to go to
them, but she will have a hearing in
a few days, as Messrs. H. & L. sav
they are determined never to allow
another case of stealing io go by tin
punished. This is perfectly right,
and we hope that all of our mer
chants will adopt the same plan, and
not le: any of them go unpuuial ed.
We are saiisfi and it would work to
the good of all parties.
