A Small Fire.
A fife was discovered yesterday
in a tenant house of Dr. Hunters in
which an uncertain number of fam
ilies live. It was soon extinguish'
ed. lis early discovery and efficient
efforts in ihe right direction was all
that saved it, for its roof was none
the newest. A little smoke and a
small sized sensation was ail we saw

death of Mrs. Eliza Lowry, an aged
and estimable lady living in ibis
county—the mother of Col. W. A.
Stokes, * She, was’ a consistent mem
ber of the A. R, Preshytenan Church.
She was hetoved by all who knew
her, and her death will be universal
ly lamented.
Would that we were permitted to
stop here ; but the fell destroyer has
laid bis cold icy hand or. another
home, and flowers may bloom arooud
it and shed their sweet pet fumes
about its threshold, but they wifi
not meet her smile, nor will her be
reaved ones again bask in her love
dri this earth. The subject of our
ren arks is Mrs, Mary Powell, who
dipd on Monday morning last, after
lingering for some months with an
affection of theiutigsi She leaves a
hpsband, mother. % child and a
hbst of friends to mouin her death.
She Was also a tnemi.er of the A. R.
Presbyterian Church, and was emi
nently pious.

A Cyaione.
On Monday evening last a terrible
cyclone passed through the lower
part of our county, doing considera
ble damage io parties in its line. It
swept every bouse away on Mr. A,
J. Cook’s place. His dwelling house
was blbwn down on himself, son and
son’s wife and child. They were all
injured to some exient, but Mrs. C’s
injuries were more serious than any
of ihe rest—her shoulder-blade being
broker*. Kronr a gentleman right
from Mr. Cook’s place, we learn that
his losses could not be covered with
$3,000. Some ol the articles blown
from the housp were found 3 miles
distant. Up to this writing we have
heard of no other parties being seri><
ouslv damaged, exfgpt Judge-A. E.
Tarver, who lost seveial bo .ses and
fences.
