HOMESTEAD.
The Atlarta News speaks thus of
the Homestead :
j .We object to the present home
sh ad exemption for two reasons. Il
is excc-sive. By exempting prop
erty to the aniount of three thous
and dollars gold, ihe credit of nine.-
lentlis oi ilie people is destroyed. If
opr financial condition was prosper
ous ; if we had not, less than a cle
cade of years ago, lost every dollar
of the capital it required two centu
ries of almost unbroken prospeiiiy
to accumulate, such an exemption
would not he excessive, because the
nt ce-sity for doing business on the
cieUit system would not exist. But
sr limed as we are and have been for
the last ten years, to exempt three
thousand dollars worth of pr operty
Iron) taxation is to paralyze industry
and destroy mm’s ability to fidd to
theii own and the Stafce ; s wealth.
In our condition, the only thing
that could neutralize the.evil effects
of tlie present homestead exemption
would l e impTisotitnent for debt,
but i he spitit of the age will not tol
etate a return to any such barbarity.
Society naturally revolts at the idea
that inability to pay a debt is a
crime, and yet it is a fact that not a
lew men will claim the benefit of the
homestead ra her than pay a debt
they have legally contracted,
if the amount of ptoperiy ex*mp| P( }
was reduced to fiV6 hundred or • one
thousand dollars, the op, or j un jtj

woutd be limited, while the bgnefi
cent purpose of all bmes’ead ex
emptions would be r/ 'ned. While,
iherefote, we are favor of do
ing away with suar.c.emptions, we
are certainly iti/ vof of reducing
them to proportions.
Another ohjfcaen. and the most
serious cine wsave to ‘lie operation'
of the homei aj law, is its abuse.
It may be <4ibted if one in three of

of this kind .have been c\ led to our

We think the News right in the
view it takes of this evil, for it is an

Messrs., Editors :—Not ninay
nights ago, on tfie plantation of Mr.
Jas. B. Smith of Witshing'on coun
ty, was born a child that possessed
its many peculiarities as almost any
ever .known in this eountiy. In the
first-place size was cnoimous—
weighing.’between fifteen and twen
ty pounds. Moreover, on each'hand
wepa seven well developed (injures,
that is five fingures atu two.thumbs
—and on each loot were six toes.—
T'liess lingers and toes did not
seem to be .boneless and useless ap
pendages, but were all perfectly de
vel 'ped. The child seemed to b.e of
an amphibious nature—calculated to
exist on land of in water, as its feet
and hands were webbed like a
dnck’3 foot. The mother of this
monster is a negro woman, who sur
vives and is doing well. The child
was still born. # * *

at Mount Airy, was blown endwise
clear through a hickory tree, and it
is now embodied there, and has been

and Brannon. The end wliich passed
through extends about a foot, on the
other side. The trees were stripped
of bark as if shaved by a Knife. —
The tops of the trees were whirled
off and tossed hundreds of feet in the
air. At Mount Any a mule was fas
tened to a wagon. The wagon was
blown seveta! hundred yards on a
house, and the mule has not been
found. Two hoisps were blown over

so happy and gay^,
Don't call her fickle ! The idea of

Why.she don’t dare say her. soul
is her own, much less endeavor to
caotiyate any one’s elses. She is
very winning to be sure, but she
isn’t aware of it, and in herLmodesty
she is ..always dodging behind the
clouds, instead of trying to attract
attention.
April’s heart, though, is somewhat

She often has a pretty,

she ajways smiles thrqugii her tears

‘lf I leave.you,’ returned the un
