Blcssrs. Editors : —Gentlemen,
Will you all >w us a small space
in your valuable paper, to commas
nicate with our brethren of- the Or
der, and let them know how we are
progressing ? If you will, we prom
ise you a good seat and something
substantial to eat, if you will come
up and spend a day with U3 after
next harve.-t. You wid? Thank
yous rs, and now hear what we have
to say.
Our grange lias been organized
some sixteen mentis ; for (lie fust
eight or ten months we made hut
little progress, and had but few acx
cessions to our number. The fact is,
the machinery being new, the work
was asvkward, and we were slow to
comprehend the situation; but we
are now pretty well broke to the
harness, our officers a 1 understand
their business, and we all begin lo
comprehend more of the objects and
aims of the organization. We meet
regularly once a month, and fre*
quently have called meeiingstotrans
act business that seems pressing.
The cause is gaining in favour with
the people How, and our ranks are
filling up rapidly. At our last meet
ing we advanced twenlysone to the
third Degree. We now number
seventysone rs, forty-four
males, and iwentysseven females. At
ourregular meetings we spend a porx
tion of ihe time in discussing and
interchanging view? and opinions ot
various t >pips rela mg to husbandry.
We do noi have m an y set speeches,
or great displays of pratory, fur we
are plain farmers, fartrprs wives and
daughters, and are nQt regularly
trained to that kind of wprk, but we
have some good lectures, and some
good select reading, which is both
inttresting and ediljing. One grand
olijrct we try to keep in view is, to
encourage diversified fanning, to
plant more pf the cereals, and less
cottoq. It is the only way to make
our farms selt-snstaimng, apd we caq
nut claim independence until that
point is reach'd.
We are now engaged in building a
large and commodious Hall for the
use of our grange. When that is
completed, with the necessary fix
tures, we shall be prepared to ho'd
our sessions and conduct the exer
cises in order as they should be, YYe
have a bright future before us, judg
ing from ihe past, and all we have
to do is to per.-eyere, to realize our
tondest exp ctatinn3.
Our Soldier President has been
urging Congress to reduce the Curs
rency of the country to a specie ba -
sis: Now, we don’t care so much
about .the basis, though we love the
specie. ;But, we are like old rPeavy
was by the biscuits, we are as fond
of it as any people you ever saw, and
handle about at little of it. The
main point is this, yve are las
boring to approach as near a cash ba
sis as possible,to get outoi debt, and
stag out. This accomplished, we
shail feel that we are on the h'gh
road to prosperity.
Our grange is a me nln r of the Sa*
vaunah River Association T. 13., and
our members have subs ribed two ns
tp-fi.e shares ol s eek in the Corpo
ration Warehouse at Augusta, Ga.
By order of the Grange.
