T THE CATERPILLAR, extends over the whole
Cotton region. Its ravageshave been disastrous, in
many sections destroying the young bolls after con
suming the leaves. A writer from Dooly county
says they are moving northward. We do not know
how much farther they go, but we noticed in a small
Cotton field of ours a few days ago, that the leaves
wei ¢ thovoughly riddled.

Fruit. . ,
We are gratified that our Fruit Crop has been so
largely utilized. Distilled, Canned, Dried and Green,
the aggrecate of value saved is very considerable
though probably not more than half the Crop has
heen thus secared. -In futuve the Fruit crop prom
ises to be one of the most valuable of the farm.
Our ol friend MELELLAN is up to the cyesin the
Fruit business sending off large quantities of ~dried
fruit and converting into Cider and shipping large
quantitics of Apples.
The Meeting |
Called by the Young Men's Democratic Club of this |
County for Monday last was well attended and every
thing passed off happily. We heard a portion of the
addresses of Mr, ANDERSON and Col. WADDELL,
both temperate, argumentative and convincing.—
Subsequently, addresses were delivered by Col.
SueMaTe, of Whitfield, and Col. ROBERTSON, elo
quent and highly pleasing.
It is gratitylng for us to say in behalf of our peo
pie that public meetings are held in our City fre
quently by both parties and that no disturbance, or
thought of disturbance, has transpired. It is highly
creditable to us,

Marietta :
May become a City of fur greater Commercial im
portance than is generally anticipated. Tt is ounly
mecessary, in the first place, that the market here
ghould have stocks to meet all demands and then to
gell these goods, which we can do, as low as com
peting markets. When it is generally known among
eonsumers in the surronnding country. that these
are fucts, the trade of a large avea of country will be-
Jong to Marietta.
Lot our Merchants then combine in the ereation cf
a market here where everything can be found for
gale that the country demands. In all Teading Tincs
Jet the Stoeks be ample, as they ave at present, in
Giroceries and Dry Goods; and in other lines, let
them be adequate, so that every customer can be
ensily supplied with all he wants; and then, with
our many advantages we will find trade rapidly in
erease and our City growing in Commercial pros

Grand Democratic Rally 1m
Cobb County!!
THE PEOPLE ALIVE TO
THE IssUL!
SPEECIIES, ILLUMINATIONS, &c.
IMMENSE ENTHUSIASNM! ;
MagizTra, Sept. 21st, 1868. .
in pursuance to a call made and ex
tended by the Young Men's Democratic
Club of Cobb County, the citizens from
all parts of the County eame in crowds.
Upon motion of Mr. Frank Robert,
the meoting was called to order at, 11
o'clock, by calling upon Hon. Wa. D.
AxpErsoy, President of the Young
Men’s Democratic Club of this District,
to preside, and H. A. DuxwooDY to act
as Secretary. Both motions being car
ried, the meeting was duly organized.
Several of old Cobb’s veteran Demo
crats were invited to seats upoa the
stage, among whom were Judge Kirk
patrick, Col. Allen Winn and Mr. Eze
kiel IHarris.
A committec was next appointed to
wait upon Rev. Mr. Battolph and re
quest him to open the proceedings with
prayer. Mr. Buttolph responded in a
very touching appeal to the King of
Kings and Lord of Lordsin behalf of our
distracted country.
Mr. Anderson next addressed the
meeting explaining its objects to be a
Democratic Rally to show that there is
life in the old land yet. Mr. Anderson
continued his speech for about an hour
in his usual forcible and eloquent style.
Col. James D. Waddell was next in
¢roduced by the President and entértain
od us in his accustomed learned, inter
esting and convincing manner. Col.
Waddell’s specch lasted an hour and a
half, and was listened to throughout with
marked attention, only interrupted by
bursts of applause and laughter as he
showed forth scallawagism and carpet
bag Radicaliem in its real and true light.
The Hon. 1. K. Shumate, Representa
tive from Whitfield was arrested at the
train by the citizens, and was wrgently
solicited to attend our meeting and favor
us with an address. Mr. Shumate was
accordingly introduced and replied
in a speech an hour and a_half long car
rying conviction to the minds of all and
entertaining the assembly in a most in
teresting and instructive maunner.
Col. James M. Robertson being loudly
called for responded in that peculiarly
happy style belonging to him, pleasing
all, and edifying cvery one. Col. Robert
son addressed a considerable portion of
his specch to the Freedmen, clearly
showing by practical illustrations that if
they wish for true friends among White
Men, that they should lookto the South
ern White Man and not to the Yankee
Carpet-bagger or Native Traitor.
At the conclusion of Col. Robertson’s
remarks it was moved and 'carried that
a report of the day’s proceedings be
published in the MARIETTA JOURNAL and
the Democratic papers of Atlanta.
Upon metion, the meeting then ad
journed with a Benediction from Rev.
Mr. Buttolph.
At night the Public Square was bil
liantly illuminated, fire works were ex
hibited, bon-fires kindled, torch lights
flourished, and immense enthusiasm pre
vailed.
Col. Waddell and Mr. Shumate were
visited by the crowd and called upon for
specches, to which call they responded
and encouraged the concourse of citizens
who listened to them.
Many of our fairest ladies were pres
ent and graced the meeting of the morn
ing and witnessed the jubliant display of
evening, which showed forth the fact,
that there is life in the Old Land yet.
H. A. Duxwooby, Acting-Sec’y.
Too mccy PoriticaL EXCITEMENT.—
The Macon Telegraph speaking of the
announcement that the Democratic
members of the Legislatuse had conelud
ed to make no provision for a Congress
ional election this Fall, very justly says:
“Upon considerations of general pub
lic policy it is held to be extremely de
sirable to obtain, if possible, a rest and
release from political excitement. The
South has now been the theatre of con
stant and excessive political agitation
since 1860. For eight long years we
have been without repose and under a
constant pressure of political excitement
and anxiety. All our material and so
cial interest have suffered greatly from
this ccaseless agitation and unrest, and
‘the postponement of the Congressional
clection to next year bestows an interval
