The Marietta Post Office.
~During the past two years complaints have come
to us from various quarters, principally from Post
Offices supplied by the cross-mails, of the non-arrival
of the MARIETTA JOURNAL or of its non-delivery in
time. We have been silent on the subject hoping
that the injustice done was not intentional and that
a little better acquaintance with his duties would
enable our Post Master to avoid its repetition.
We are frequently asked now by citizens living .
outside of Marietta, but having their Post Office here
—“Why have you discontinued sending us the
JOURNAL through the Post Office?” We are sorry
to say, in explanation, that though the Post Office
laws require the delivery of all Newspapers through
the Post Offices free, in the Counties in which they
are published ; and though it has been a custom
coeval with the Post Office in Marietta to deliver
the Papers published here to subscribers who cannot
be conveniently reached by the Printing Office car
rier, yet, thiat the present Post Master has for the
past year persistently refused to deliver the JOURNAL ‘
to subscribers even when they proffered to pay him
postage thereon. We still made no complaint, but
went to work to avoid as far as possible this new
mode of warfare upon the MARIETTA JOURNAL,
and announced to our readers that we would deliver
the paper at the Printing Office to those who would
Swaive the inconvenience and call there for them.—
This we have been doing for the present year and
we hoped that this divieion of Post Office duties with
‘our Post Master would prevent any further cause of
gomplaint ‘But, en Saturday last, complaint came
8 b that our largelist of Subscribers at Powder
B as well as those in Paulding had failed to
getitheir paper. We inquired of the employees of
the Office and obtained the following report: That

‘We would like to present in a brief panigraph‘
some eonception of the varied and valuable contents |
of the November Number of this excellent work, In
the opening article on “Work for the Month” we
bavesome timely suggestions on wheat*“Wheat Cul
ture ;” the bdest manures and their proportions.—
Then an article on “Bee Culture,” followed by a tell
ing common-sense letter from DAvVID DICKSON the
eminent Planter of Hancock who raises a thousand
Bales of Cotton and two Bales per acre by his mode
of Culture and fertilizing. Then we have the bis
tory and development of the Native Bone Phos
phat{‘s of South- Cavolina by Prof. N. A. Pratt reveal
ing fertilizing material of incalculable valne to South
ern Agriculture. Then a cheap, efficient and dura
ble, plan for “Draining Lands.” . We are not half
way through but must stop and refer the interested
reader to the work itself.

Diep Our.—All talk about the late
election has about died out in this city,
except a remark made occasionally
about the result in Georgia. Some gen
tlemen are confident Seywour carried it
by at least 40,000 majority. Of the 132
counties in the State, we think Grant
s not carri®@®ifteen at the outside.—
So far as our election table goes, he car
ries Richmond, Putnam, Bibb, Twiggs,
Lce, Greene, Thomas, Baldwin and
Morgan—nine. He may get majorities
in fifteen, but we at present doubt it.—
This shows conclusively that “the scep
ter has departed from Judah,” and that
henceforward Georgia will be ruled by
the Democratic party.—Muacon Tel.
AFTER TEE ELIRCTION !
oR :
A Word in Good Season,
At last, the long agony of the Presi
dential Canvass is over! The mass
meetings and processions of enthusiastic
partisans ; the heared appeals of political*
orators ; the recriminations of opposing
journals; the ridicule, the abuse and
misrepresentation of the fierce campaign
have all subsided ; the votgofa free peo
ple has been cast ; tne polls are closed ;
the verdict is rendered. The shouting
and drumming have died away, and the
‘staves, banners, torches and transparen
cies of clubs and legions rest quietly in
the corners to which they have been con
signed, until the next struggle of con
tending aspirants shall call threm forth to
serve their turn, @in.
In fine, the minor questions of the
hour have been decided, and snow it is
incumbent upen all to fall into the line of{
march with us on the path that leads
to the settlement of those grand funda
mental problems upon which hang the
aniversal interests of men and nations.
Swerving neither to the right ‘er to the
left, advancing with a single object in
view, we have moved steadily onward,
aninfluenced by the fantasies, prejadi
ces, theories or dogmas of any particular
class or body of men. Our aim has been
the general welfare of our countrymen in
all sections, no matter what subordimate
views may temporarily divide them.
The rules of sound free government, in
the abstract, and their particular appli
cation to our own case ; the arrangement
‘d wise administration of national and
local finance ; the inculcation of ideas of
correct political economy; the harmoni
zing of sections, and races, and classes-—-
these have been the cardinal points of
our aims and endeavors, and to the fresh
consideration and advocacy of these ob
jeets, we again invite all thoughtful, pas
triotic and enlightened men. Now is the
very hour to unite with us in the great
work. The partisan journals have ha
their say; only the truly conservative ans
national organs now command. the situs
ation. .
We ask the American public then, ab
this appropriate hour, to join our pha
lanx. We advance toward national
union, liberty and prosperity in the
broadest and best meaning of those
words. Come, then, one and all
