GREAT EXCITEMENT IN SHUFFLE-

' ‘ Particulars!! 2
- The cleventh day of Febrnary A. D,
1869, will long be remembered by the
good people of Shufiletown, for on that
day an important and interesting event
oceurred whiel served to relicve the dull
‘menotony which usually’ prevails in our
quict ‘and peaceful litde village, "and
‘which nfl"orgbd an oceasion of much ox
citing amusement and plegsure to many
of the inhabitants. ’
The morning, of the day alluded to,
was “beautifal and bright.” Not a
cloud was seen to obscuce the egralean
concave above. The sun, “the gloriong
King of day,” arose as usnal, “‘rejoicing
in the east.” The inhabitants of Shuf
fletown arose also. A rcd and a domi
necker rooster were' caught and made
ready for the terrible conflict, which
was scon to take place. Thoe moment
ous o¢casion at length arrived, A rin;,,r‘
of cager and delighted spectators was
formed. The cambatants were placol
in the centre in formidable and hostile
array; and then commenced the &san
guinary straggle Time after time did
they ¢harge upon cach ‘othei’s breast
works, and sometimes one was repulsed
and [sometimes the other, the anxions
crawd all the while leaning forward, and
waiting in breathless suspense, to see the
issué of the' bloody encounter., The
writer begs leave to give the result in
the following lofty, poctical strain:
« In rapid suceession did old domineek
Inflict on his adversary peck after peeks ;
But ac last the inviacible, the gallant old.ped,
Gave his foe such a blow on the side of his head,
As caused him to raize Tn an fnstant Lis hack, \
Aud retreat in disorder, erying, quaek ! quack!
quack ! |
Tha huzzahs were long, the huzzalis were loud,
Which then went up trom that wondering crowd,
It is-ngedless to add, that this eudwd the fun,
And that money was lostand mouey was wou. ‘
There were some old fogics about
town who did not manifest tho deast ins |
torest in the affnir; but that need not be |
weondered at, for there are some people
inshe world who have very poor tasto,
andt who can never be bronght to anpre
ciate 'any thing which tends to promote
civilization and refinement, and to ele
vate society. It is gratifving, however, i
to all true loves of innocent amusement,
to sce these indications of the return of
the sublime and time-honored customs of
the ancients. Don't we need relaxation,
exeitement and amusement ; and ean
we expeot to advance in refinement

If the proper steps were taken we
might have a cock-pit erected in Shuflle
