could not live on less, as they were
idle so long during vacation in the

SHOT DBAD IN HIS TRACKS.
[Charlotte Observer, 25ih. ]
A negro named Leacl, brother o 4
Poter Leach who was convicted of
murder at Lumberton last week, not
long ago escaped from itobesoa conn
ty jail. Laet Saturday tho*sherifl’ of
the county heard that Leach was ia
the vicinity of Red Banks, and sent
a deputy named Cole'to arrest him.
It was known that the negro was a
desperate character and the sheriff
armed his depoty with a sixteen
shooter ritle, captured from the fa.
mous Honry Berry Lowry of the out
law notoriety. Cole went to Red
Banks and had no difficuty in ascer
taining the whereabouts of his man.
He was warned of the danger of
making the arrast, but being so well |
armed he felt no uneasiness, The
negro was approached and the cepias
read to bim. e heard it patiently
and then coolly remarked : “Do you
suppose I'm going to allow such u‘
man as you to arrest me !’ Almost
before he fipished the sentence he
drew a pistol and shot Cole dead in
bis tracks, the ball passing through
the skull. Not satisfied with this,
he stepped on the prostrate body of
the man and fired another shot into
his breast, He then coolly walked
away- Our information is that the
terrible tragedy was enacted in the
presence of three or four other men,
and no attempt was mado to arrest
Leach. As he went away he still
held the weapon in his hand, aod no
one dared approach hiw.
Leach belongs to that desperate
clasa of half breeds that have been
such a terror to the pecple of that
section in the past years. Onr io
formant was unable to learn the na
tare of the offsnse for which he was
held in jail when he mado his escape.
The body of youog Cole was takeu
from Red Banks to Rockingham,
where he has rela‘ives,[or interment.
Our ioformation is that he was not a
regalar deputy, bat was selected by
the sheriff to make this arrest on ac
count of his personal courage and
daring.

IA MAN WHO MADB AND LOST A
FORTUNE-HOW HIS LUCK
CHANGED.
New York, November, 25, -~
Thera is now in the street a man
who came from Connoecticut a few
yenrs ago aud made $9OO 000 iu six
months, He had $7,000 to start
with, partly money that he had sav
ed and the rest borrowed In what«
aver direction he reached monay
scemed to unower the tonch. The
news of his lnek]went back and fair
ly bawildercd the town whence he
game, Of thoso who took tha fever
soven gave up theiclemploiyment and
came to the city, making here a lits
tle bungh of jspeculators like fmany
another that may be found in Wall
street, drawn together by like causes
from many parts of the county. It
is just when somebody draws a prize
in lottery, straightway half the peos
ple in the neighborhood go to buy
g lottery tickets. And for the
sawe peasons you may fiod in emall
cities or towns remoie from New
Yark communities who seem to have
a bent for stock epeculations. Ack
why, andjusually you will discover
that samebodyffrom that town has
goue to New York and taken up the
stock buiness or at some time has
made a big hit there.
Among those who followed the
man from Conuveticut was a young
fellow who bad} about $BO,OOO -~ his
share of a fortune left by a relattve,
This made him rich in bis country
town, but he was'/dazzled' by the
then rapidly increasii g fortune of
his succesful fellow-townsman, He
began putting small bites” of | his
$BO,OOO into the Wall street shark’s
‘mouth and lost steadily, but not
enough to alarm him, for he had no
doubt his luck would turn aad give
him as much money as the man who
had stenck it rich, had made, He
met that foriunata individual in the
street one day and said: “You've
got $900,000 —-enough for anybody
to live on. Why don't you take it
and got out and leeep it 1’
«Bacanse | want to make it a
round million —then I'll clear out.”
In less than two months he lost
every dollars of the $900,000. Luck
weot as persistently against him as
it had been for him, and ina despers
ate endeavor to regain his losses he
stacked up his margius until the
whole great fortune had melted
away. It took the man with [550,~
000 a year to lose his money. He
made smaller and more cautious op
erations, but he lost the same. He
could not withstand the fascination
of the street, and now hé is the
cashier of & small banking coocern
at a salary of $1,500 u year. The
900,000 man stuck toit, too —
Sometimes ha was clad and agaio
not so well. Oceasionally he made
a little striko of a few hondred and
speedily lost it all. When he got
particularly hard agroned he would
slip up home and stay awhil bat
would soon return with a small capis
tal and try again. On August 4th
last he appeared with $lOO, which
he put up as a margio with a broker
who had handled hondreds of thous
sands for him in his flush days and
began to buy stocks. He strack
the fist of this great ficod tide that
has inandated the country and came
in with it. As his profits increased
he kept on buying steadily, puiting
in all he had with the nerve of a goi
dier; and with wisdom gained of
previous experience he stopped
short three days ago, when the mar
kot became choppy ard uncertaio,
and rested on his oars with $300,000
in bank. This safely invested in
four per cents would give him an in
come of $12,000 a year, enongh for
' man of simple taste to live on com
fortebly ; but he sticks to the street
and is still going in to make it a mil
lion and in’ all human probability be
L will keep at it until he is down again
and will wind up by joining the
small army of cuarbstone brokers
who lead & wretched existence aud
finally fade away nobody knows

“FOUR POUNDS OF ANGUINTUM."”
It was not a very elegant story,
but it was excessively fusny the way
Cornell told it. 'T'here bad been six
teen flouring mills losses up in Min
nesota, and to talking it over, Mr.
GGeneral Agent BB stated that his
company had fourteen of them!—
“That reminds me of the mau out in
lowa,” said Cornell, **who went into
a drug store and ordered four pounds
of anguintum. ‘Four pounds of an
gointum !’ said the astonished drug-~
gist, ‘whag in the world do you waat
8o wuch for ¥ The man came close
¢p to him and whispered coofidenti~
ally, ‘l'm lousy!' ‘Yes, but,’ said
the draggist, ‘four paunds of anguin
tum would kill ali the lice in lowa,’
‘That's it exactiy,” said the customer,
‘that’s what's the matter; I've got ‘em
allI” Weare bappy to remark, that
while we kuow compaaies which are
parasited with flouriog mills to rather
an alarmicg extent, we do not know
of any single one that has “‘got ‘em
all” If there were such a company
‘we do ot believe that even forty
I pounds of anguintum would score it.
