Agricultural,
BOES FARMING PAY?
Whether farming pays or no, is a
question that upon the kind of farm
er a man is or the kind of farming he
practices. It will probably not be
denied that there are some farmers
who make “farming pay,” and we
readily, but sadly, admit that & much
greater number do not make it pay.
But the [sense in whkich the term
“pay” is used must *finite and
well understood. In™fhe sense of
living in reasonable comfort and add
ing annually to the market value of
the farmer’s possessions—or growing
in wealth by acgpetion of a reasona
ble percentage omthe capital employ
ed—we believe tht only a very small
percentage of farmers in the cotton
ton States are making “farming
pay.” Itis difficult to agree upon
what percentage of increase on the
value of a man’s property—what
amount of net income from his
farm—would be sufficient to justify
him in claiming that he is making
his business pay. One farmer may
have a large and unproductive family
to support, and but a small capital
invested in his farm. Another farm
er is not blessed with so many chil
dren, or they are more helpful and
profitable, while he has a larger in
herited or acquired capital.
It is manifest that the first may fail
to make a comfortable support for
his family-—though exercising equal
gkill and industry in the manage
ment of his farm with the other—
while the latter_may live in comfort
and realize o surplus each year. The
thoughtless observer would regard
the one as a failure and the other as
a suceess, when, in truth there is no
difference in the eredit to which each
may be entitled. In many cases the
question of making the farm pay is
very largely affected by the relation
which the amount of available capi
tal (land, steck, tools, supplies,) bears
to the unproductive dependents upon
the farm.
In a still greater number of in
stances the exercise of proper econo
my in expenditures and consumption
is 2 potent factor in solving the prob
lem. But, after all, the exercise of
skill in the management—in the
preparation of the soil, tne proper re
lation between the several crops, the
saving and manipulation of manures,
the methods of culture, ete., 18 t}lt"
most important and controlling fac
tor. If & man uses brains, ./l and
industry in the management of his
farm and his business does not pay,
then it may be truly said that farm
g does not pay ! for if brains, skill
and industry do not result in success,
nothing else will. It such conditions
insure suceess then farming does pay ;
and if the conditions be not complied
with, and failure results, the fault is
not chargeable to farming as a busi
ness, hut to the particular method (or
want of method) employed. “There
is more in the man than there is in
the land,” is a saying full of truth.
It might be amended without strip
ping it of its wisdom, so as to read
there is more in the method than
there is in the business.
Some men fail in a business at
which others aceumulate fortunes.
The country is full of broken mer
chants, briefless lawyers, and impc-‘
cunious doetors, yet no one says that
merchandising, or the practice of law
does not pay. And the reason is ob
vious, in view of the number of men
who have sueceeded, and are daily
succeeding in the prosecution of
these several professions.
MENXTCAN JUMPING BEANS,
Many persons who have secen the
Mexican jumping seeds, or devil’s
beans, are unable to account for their
mysterious antics, They not only
roil from one side to the other, but
actually moves by jerks and jumps,
and sometimes jump some distance
from any object they are resting on.
These movements are caused by a
plump, whitish worm inside the bean.
It remains in a larva state a long
tinie hefore transforming so that the
sced keeps up its motion through
most of the winter months. When
about to transform it cuts a circular
door through the convex side of its
house and is transformed to the pupa
state. The moth soon afterwards
pushes its way out. The beans grow
on a plant called arrowweed, the bark |
of which is an active eathartic, and a
poison in large doses. For years past
these jumping beans have been ex
hibited in different parts of the coun
try, and to the uninitiated they have
been objects of wonder and mystery.
The explanation of their Jjumping
properties does not rob them of their
interest as curiosities.— Constitution.

The Fort Wayne (Indiana) journal
says that there are 39,228 negroes in
Indiana and not one of them holds an
