Agricultural,
_—
IN T™HE OrcHAßD.—Cultivate the
orchard by plowing lightly and keep
out all weeds and grass, but don’t
plant grains or grasses there if you
expect a crop of fruit or the preser
vation of the trees. Surface crops
will take up the manure and starve
out the trees. Plant peas ifanything
and let them rot upon the ground.
i —
CorroN SeEp.—Hogs may safely he
fed on green cotton sced if the seed
are dumped into shallow water a few
days before the hogs are turned upon
them. What kills the pogs is not the
seed but the lint, and the water soon
takes this off.
et I — .
Toßacco.—Will grow well in all
the Southern states. Light sandy,
hammock land, if rich, is most favor
able, but it does well in all high lands,
and takes potash fertilizers, like Irish
potatoes. The seeds are sown in the
Spring, generally in old ash heaps,
and set out like cabbages.
SRR R
Fruir Trees.—lt is worse than
folly to plant an orchard in low, flat,
damp lands. A gently sloping hill
gide is the hest location, but even
broken, rock-covered slopes may of
ten be utilized with profit. Let there
be soil enough, and then use the
rocks to keep it in place. Always
keep in mind that an orchard must
be well drained.
et
Rice.—Every farm in the lower
South, should have an upland riee
patch. It can be raised ata cost of
less than 810 per acre on new land
no grain surpasses it in healthfulness
and nutrition. Break up the new
land well, sow the rice in drills two
feet apart in the rows, plow with a
sweep and keep down the weeds and
grass with the hoe. Sow the rice in
A[il'i].
Tue CoNcn Pra.—This is a tropi
cal pea now introduced in Florida,
where it grows with great vigor, pro
ducing vines enormously and fruiting
about the first of September. The
hills may be planted four feet apart
and yet the vines will cover the
ground, showing it to be a valuable
forage maker and fertilizer of the soil.
The fruit isalso palatable, ranking
with many other varieties better
known.
el e
Miro Maize.—ls our old time
“Egyptian corn,” just like another
species is our old time “gi.. 4" and
“chicken” corn; but they have new
names now, and seedmen make “zood
things” out of the new introductions,
as did Peter Henderson, by turning
our old cattail into *pearl” millet.
There’s nothing like a new name and
a good advertisement.
——— e b
Roor GrarriNé.—You wish to
graft the slow growing pears upon
the rapid, hardy Le Conte. Very
well 3 you will put out the first year
as many of the cattings of the latter
as you desire grafts. The next spring
in March or April when the sap is
up, you will cut them down at the
ground and graft in the Bartlett, or
other good pear, and so have them on
the best possible roots for pear growth. ;
————— 1
Your Laxpscare.—Does your
“place” look nice, or shabby? s it
cumbered with lTogs, trash and brush
heaps, and cut into unsightly gullies?
Is it bare of trees, overrun with weeds
and rickety with. old houses and
fences? 1f so, set about its improve
ment. Put it in order, beautify and
make it lovely with graceful wees
and odorous flowers. Bring harmo
ny and thrift into action and show
yourself a landscape gardener.
- e
Tue Hor Bep.—The seeret of sue
cess in its use, is in closing at night
and airing it daring the day; in oth
er words, in regulating its tempera
ture by timely attention. 1t is the
place for starting all tender garden
plants, and the farmer who negleets
it will fall behind in carly vegetables.
el
Suapsy Conrs.—There is no tell
ing what good feeding and attention
will bring out of Bhabby colts. Maud
Messenger, when a vearling sold for
twelve dollars and a half. Afterward
she made 2:163, and sold for several
thousand. |

ALFALFA,~—Or Lucerne, isa deep
growing perennial clover, rvquirin:i
rich clay soil, but fully repaying cul
tivation by its abundant yield of fine,
nutritious forage. It grows in all
our climates north of Florida, and is
held in high esteem by stockraisers.
——— D ® e e
Jute vs. Corrox.—The invention
of fire-proof cotton bagging in Geor
gia, enabling cotton planters to util
ize the staple for its own bailing and
preservation, is likely o give a black
eye to Indiajute and Kentucky hemp.
Almost every turn of the wheel of
progress brings something new and
valuable to the South. The time
has arrived for the cotton-picker.
Let it come South.
