SAVE THE Laxps.—You have had
some hard rains and expect others,!
but have you hauled trash, sawdust
or other materials to fill that ugly
gully through your land, and which
bears away the richest of your top
soil with every shower? What is the
use to buy guano as long as you neg
lect that? If your premises occupy
a slope, guide the rain water from the
house, the yard, the horse lot and
cowpen, gently down and through the
cultivated land, by little dams and
shallow trenches, letting it spread
and deposit its fertility.
el
PraxTiNg CorN.—lt does not need
to be planted deep, and should not be,
but the soil should be deeply broken.
One half the manure should be put
in the drill at planting and the other
reserved for the surface or the side
furrows when the corn is waist high.
No matter how deep corn is planted,
if not deep enough to rot or lie dor
mant, the top root in going down,
will push the old grain up near the
surface before the blades appear.
That is the proper depth to plant.
Tue Draw Bep.—The sweet pota
to draw bed will be made in Febru
ary. Choose a place of hard ground
on the sunny side of a house or close
plank fence to shelter from the north
wind. Scrape out beds three feet
wide, as long as you' please and four
inches deep. Fill it level with half
rotted stable manure well pounded.
On this half bury the potatoes by
pressing them into it, and cover at
least 3 or 4 inches with the soil taken
out. Cover the bed from cold and
open it to the sunshine.
LR e
Svaar CaNe—~lf you plant in Feb
ruary, break deep but plant only 3 or
4 inches as usual, with the manure
under the cane, observing to cover
well with a turn plow. This will ‘
preserve it against the cold, but as
soon as warm spring weather comes,
run over the rows with a board, like
covering cotton, to remove a part of
the thick covering. The cane will
then begin rapidly to germinate, very
rich compost is not good for sugar
cane, or for sorghum. Cotton seed,
green or rotted are fine. |

CLEARED 20 Per CENT.—Mr. Wash

WINDMILLS.
OvVER five thousand windmills are
manufactured and sold in this coun
try every year. Considering the an
tiquity of the invention this is a
pretty good evidence of its populari
ty. For certain specific purposes,
where the work is of a nature that
admits of a suspension during a calm,
or where accumulated power can be
stored for future use, the windmill is
the most economical motor that can
be devised. Windmills used for
pumping purposes may be relied
upon to run on an average eight
hours out of the twenty-four. The
records of the signal service show
that two days is the outside limit of
the duration of a calm. The only
cost incident to the operation of these
mills is the oil; and a few gallons a
year is all that is required. 'The
wind of course is the free gift of na
ture. There is no attendance re
quired. An eight and one-half foot
wheel will raise 3,000 gallons of water
daily a distance of twenty-five feet.
A ten foot wheel will raise 9,000 gal
lons of like distance daily. A twen
ty-five foot wheel will raise 100,000
gallons daily, the specified distance.
It will be seen that this is a cheap
and convenient motor for supplying
water to manufacturing establish
ments, upper floors, railway tanks,
and the same means may be advan
tageously employed in irrigating arid
lands.
An exchange very properly says:
This continual ery of hard times
does no good; it actually does harm.
It causes the money lender to draw
the strings tighter around his purse ;
he wants more interest; he is more
exacting about the security; in fact,
he thinks his opportunity has come if
the prevailing opinion among the peo
ble is that it is going to be a hard year.
It does not only effect the money len
der put all others who have money
will be rather disposed to hide it than
putitin circulation. If a man comes
to town with a few dollars to spend
and is told on every corner that its
going to be a ‘“mighty hard year”
and that “money never was so scarce,”
he will be eertain to carry a part of
that money back home and make his
wife believe that a famine is approach
ing. The troth is “times are no harder
in this section than they ever were.
It's a false alarm and ought to be
squelched.
sl
A PENNsYLVANIA farmer who had
tried various methods of keeping ap
ples, obtained the best result by
wrapping each apple in paper, plac
ing in a barrel and heading it. He
bored holes in the top umf bottom,
80 as to allow a free circulation of air,
and laid the barrel upon its side in
as cool a place as was safe from the
frost.
RHEUMATISM
Although a practioncr of near twenty years,
my mother influenced me to procure B. B, B
for her. She had been confined to her bed sever
al months with Rheumatism which had stub
bornly resisted all the usual remedies. Within
twenty-four hours after commencing B. B, f! 1
observed marked relief. She has just com
menced her third bottle and is nearly as active
as ever, and has been in the front yard with
“rake in hand,” cleaning up. Her improver
ment is truly wonderful and immensely gratify,

KIDNEY TROUBLE.
For over six years [ have been a terrible suffer

than all other treatment combined. It is a
quick cure, while others, if they cu re_at all, are
