A WINDY DAY IN MARCH. ‘
No portion of the year so tries the
cheerful temper of the farmer as does
the month of March. From child
hood he has been told, and the alma
nacs have repeated it in his maturer
years, that spring begins with March.
This idea has become so firmly fixed
that successive yearly disappoint
ments have not dislodged it, but as
each succeeding March comes round,
he feels that it should bring spring
weather and spring work. We are
apt to think with something akin to
envy, of the English farmer, whose
weather comes true to the almanac,
and whose spring, if it does not begin
in March, is not deferred until May,
but borrows the later days of Febru
ary. Even in the generally genial
climate of England, March is prover
bially a blustering and uncertain
month. Even in our era the Anglo-
Saxons had in their language names
for March which meant “rugged
month,” and “stormy month.” These
people believed that March had bor
rowed three days from April, and ex
pressed the character of these days in
a proverb, which is said to be still in
use by the rustics in parts of England
and Scotland. It said of these three
borrowed days :
“The first it shall be wind and weet ;
The next it shall be snow and sleet;
The third it shall Le sic a freeze,
Shall gar the birds stick to the trees.”
With us, in some years, this zm-‘
cient description of its last three days
will apply to all the others that
precede them. The thoughttul farm
er will the more patiently endure the
bluster of the month, if he thinks of
the part these uncomfortable winds
play in preparing his lands for the
plow. A March wind is proverbially
a drying one, and it takes up the
moisture left by melting snows with
an astonishing rapidity. These winds
are even fertilizing his fields. As
they rapidly remove the water from
the surface, more comes up from be
low by capillary attraction, bringing
with it the plant-food it holds in so
lution ; as this in turn is evaporated,
whatever it contains is left in the soil,
within reach of the roots of the erops.
It is a mistake to fret about the
weather. However disagrecable it
may be, if we look with helieving
eyes we can see that every dispensa
tion of Nature is ever working for
our good.
THE CREDIT SYSTLY,
The Texas Farmer correctly asserts
that there is nothing fraught with
such damaging results to farmers as
buying on credit. It encourages ex
travagance, frequently destroys confi
dence and lowers moral worth in men
who would otherwise be our best cit
izens. The man who owes a just
debt feels it to be his duty to prom
ise topay at a certain time. The
rust wkes his wheat, the drought re
duces the yield of corn and cotton ;
he contracted debts with the expecta
tion of a full erop. He fails to keep
faith with creditors, they become dis
satisfied and exacting, and the poor
faxmer thus burdened, is humiliated
by the fact that he is unable to meet
his obligations, with himself, out of
humor with his children ; and unless
he has a full share of moral courage,
is on the road to a life of dependence
and serfdom, enslaving his wife and
children when all might be made
happy and independent by a due re
gard to economical expenditures. A
young man starting out in life should
avoid debt as he would avoid a veno
mous reptile. It will enslave your
bodies, destroy your peace of mind,
degrade your morals, your wife, vour
children, and bring a veproach upon
the mother that bore you. It will
weaken your influence as a neighbor
and make you less useful asa eitizen :
it will tax the very air you breathe,
the love you have for vour home.
your tune, your energies the clothes
you wear, the food you eat. 1t will
tax your health, and the medicine
that is administered to your disease.
It levies a tax upon the chair which
supports you at your own table, and
upon the bed on which you languish
and die, and will leave your home,
your wife, your children burdened,
with taxes after you have been laid
under the sod.

seem to be doing well, see if the soil
is not too compact, too wet or too
poor. 1t so fork over carefully with
out tearing up the roots, and work a
little compost into the surface around
the plants. If the plants are old
they may be cumberod with old dead
roots. The remedy is young plants.

Although a practioner of near twenty years,
my mother influenced me to proecure B. B. B.
