~ A SUGGESTION.
The great mass of the people of this
county and of Georgia are and will
“eontinue to be farmers. Anything
that is caleulated to instruct or ben
efit that class individually, is of in
calculable advantage to all other
trades, callings and professions in
the country. There is no argument
needed to prove that agriculture is
the great, beneficent, vital fountain
from which all temporal blessings
flow. Therefore, there is a -special
and never-failing interest in all that
pertains to the farm. Much is known
in regard to the improvement and
preservation of soils and growing
crops, like other grand sciences, the
ficld of investigation and of progress
is practically illimitable. In fact we
are only in the rudiments, the a-b-c,
of agricultural possibilities.
The State Agricultural Convention
soon meets in our midst. This is
one of the most disinterested intelli
gent and representative bodies that
bears the name of Georgians. The
deliberations of that body are digni
fied, thoughtful, comprehensive and
instructive, none so wise but that he
may add to his knowledge, and none
g 0 ignorant that on him instruction
will be lost. It is a notorious fact
that our State agricultural conven
tions have never been appreciated
by the great mass of our working
farmers of our State, the delegates
meet, deliberate among themselves,
have a pleasant reunion and disperse,
while the farmers in the immediate
neighbor are as indifterent to the
proceedings, as if they were discuss
ing an arctic expedition or the com
position of a comet.
Now, we would suggest that for
one time, that the farmers of Cobb
county, as far as possible assemble
en masse and attend the sittings of
that convention. They are the ones
to be benefitted, the occasion is only
~ presented at long intervals, and af
fords an opportunity for instruction,
recreation and social intercourse that
cannot be surpassed. Life is not in
tended for mere existence, but for ag
gression, enjoyment and improve
ment. The teachings of a Georgia
Agricultural Convention has almost
marked a new epoch in the agricul
ture of the South. We well recol
lect when the lamented Furman made
his debut before the convention in
our beautiful city, Marietta. His
small statue and his vouthful ap
pearance were more than otis t by
his perfect self-possession, his frank,
earnest manner, and his mastery of
the “King's English,” his statements
were received as the faney of avision
ary and listened to with amused
credulity, but when he stepped into
an adjoining room and producing a
cotton stalk about the height of his‘
shoulders, with one hundred and
twenty-seven well formed bolls and
squares upon it (when the average
Georgia cotton was then perhaps not
more than parallel with the top of a
ditcher’s boot,) and holding it up to
their astonished gaze, told them
“there was only an average stalk of
sixty-five acres of old wornout thread
bare Georgia lands that had seen
more than a half century ot deplet
ing tillage,” the gray-beards were
taken squarely amidships. “The proof
of the pudding” was there. One
more turn was given the wheel of ag
ricultural progress. Yet Furman
was only picking up a few pebbles on
the borders of a great field yet to be
explored ; so brother farmers come
out and let us hear and heed and
keep the ball in motion. SmyNa.
Tl QPP e,
THOROUGH CULTURE OF CORN.
The frequent failures in attempt
ing to raise heavy crops of corn are
not usually so much owing to the
want of properly fitting the soil, as in
the lack of giving thorough cultiva
tion while the crop is growing. Al
though the amount raised per acre
depends very materially upon the
fertility and preparation of the soil,
yet inferior crops may be grown upon
the land that is capable of producing
the best. Farmers are not apt to se
lect a field for corn that they know
cannot be put in good condition for
the crop, nor are they apt to plow
meagerly, but after the seed isin, too
many fold their hands and consider
the important part done.
It is a difficult matter to raise a
heavy growth of weeds and corn at
the same time upon one piece of land ;
the former must be kept down if a
good yield of grain is obtained.—
Weeds have always been one great
hindrance to successful corn raising,
but they are not so formidable an
encmy as many suppose. Advantage
should be taken of them, and the
plow or cultivator kept at work from
the time the corn rows first appear,
until the growth of grain is nearly
complete.
