Agricultural,
LUCK ON THE FARM.,
A Wisconsin dairyman uttered a
great and pregnant truth when he
remarked at a meeting of dairymen
that *‘it was not by a special dispen
sation of Providence thata certain
farmer received 898 per head for the
vearly product of his cows, while his
neighbor received only $3O per head.”
“So itis nota special act of Provi
dence,” remarks Mr. Henry Stewart,
*that on one side of the fence corn
vields 80 bushels per acre and the
hay three tons while on the other
side the products are 30 bushels of
corn and a ton of hay.” An enter
prising farmer writes that he is cut
ting his second crop of clover, which
vields a full ton per acre, and his
neighbors wonder how it is. The se
cret is that this farmer used plaster
on his clover, which made all the dif
ference ; and his other crop are equal-
Iy conspicuous and remarkable be
cause he uses fertilizers liberally as
well as manure. The rain falls on
all alike, but the better farmer gets
the most good from the rain and the
sun because he prepares and enrich
es the ground better, and so gives the
natural elements better chances to
extend their benign influence.— Ru

Save WuILE You ARE YouNG.—
Experienced people are generally
well acquainted with the force of hab
it. Once fixed it is next to impossi
ble to shake off habit, whether good
or bad. How important then that
habits of the young should be good.
Don’t be niggardly or mean with your
worldly goods, but begin to save
while you are young. Whatever you
earn save some portion of it, and it
will not be many years before you
will buy a farm. Then your real
wealth and independence may begin.
With good habits formed, industry,
economy and intelligence will surely
complete your fortune. Young man
paste this in your hat.
Raise Your Owx BacoN.—Sup
pose you had no meat to buy next
year, how easily you could raise that
mortgage or discharge some other
pressing obligation. Well, would it
not mortify you less to set about rais
ing hogs, than raising money by an
other mortgage to put off the evil
day? Pigs and shoats may be multi
plied and pushed during the summer,
on the green grass, the weeds about
the farm, the oat field, the green
corn stalks, the cane patch, the sweet
potato vines, the kitchen slops, the
refuse vegetables and many other
things. If you don’t quite succeed
this year, the brave start will bring
you out all right next year.
e — R —
Deprus 10 Prant.—ln setting out
fruit trees it is important to know
what depth to plant, because experi
ence has shown that any variation
from rule materially effects the fu
ture value of the tree. The tree
must not be planted too shallow, for
then its roots may be parched by a
drought, and yet it is better to plant
too shallow than too deep. We have
known young trees to be retarded for
years by this mistake, and many to
die out, while the grower wondered
what could be the matter. The rule
is to plant trees the same depth they
were growing when taken up. If
you have any doubt about the matter,
mark the trees at the surface before
taking them up.
Tur Lasor QuestioNn.—Let farm
ers train up their sons to take their
places on the farms and the next
generation will not be near so much
concerned about the labor question.
How can you expect the country to
be supplied with good farmers if you
don’t train them? Which of you do
not send off your sons, if able, to the
city or town, or some where else, to
learn them some other trade or pro
fession, while hiring inferior farm
hands around you? Do you know
that of late years it has become quite
as honorable to be a farmer asa law
yer, a doctor or a preacher?
—— el AP W —
Mr. James R. Vaughan, of Long
wood, Fla.,, says: 1 am not well
pleased with my home in this State.
The soil seems adapted to nothing
but the growth of oranges. No hogs
or sheep, very little cattle, and what
few there are are always thin and
extremely sorry milkers, and I think
the worst beef that I ever ate. Some
few good horses, but none of them
raised here. In some sections farm
ing is carried on successfully, but
not 8o good for the citrus family. We
are in the best portion of the State
for that purpose, but if a man ever
makes a tortune he is a long time in
doing s 0; it takeshim a short lifetime
to become independent. I miss very
much the pleasure of seeing the corn,
cotton and oat fields,
