at this place. Mr. Malcom returned to

Hon. H. C. Brown, editor of the South
ern Alliance Farmer, published in Atlan
ta, gave us a pleasant call on last Wednes
day week. We were glad to meet Mr.
Brown. He wields an able pen and is
quite an intelligent and pleasant gentle
man.

Judge H. M. Hammett has bought the
drug store of Messrs. Hice & Bridges,
under the new hotel, and took charge last
week. Judge Hammett has conducted a
drug store in Marietta before, and under
stands the business. He has a good stock,
a competent pharmacist, and solicits a
share of public patronage. . We wish him
success.

Tar Atlanta Constitation is persistent
in its unfeir treatment of the Georgia
Weekly press. It fréquently‘copies loeal
items from the MarrerTA JoUrNAL, dates
them Marietta as if sent by their corres
pondent, when in fact it is our labor they
have appropriated, without even acknowl
edging the source. Some of our citizens
have spoken to us about it. They have a
pride for their town paper, ard don't like
to see it treated this way.

Tue Alliance picuic at Glover's Grove,
on July 3ist, was largely attended. The
farmers, with their wives and daughters,
came in from all sections of the county
and brought well filled baskets of zood
things to eat. The dinner was sumptuous
and plentiful, and highly enjoyed by all
present. Specches were made by Hon. L.
F. Livingston, president of the State Al
liance, Hon. H. C. Brown, edigor of the
Southern Alliance Farmer, of Atlanta.
The speeches ot both of these distinguish
ed gentlemen were able, instructive and
enthusiastic, and were frequently applaud
ed by the appreciative crowd. The Austell
Brass Band discoursed delightful music at
intervals, and at the conclusion of the
picnic they drove to Marietta and gave
our citizens several fine pieces, which were
highly enjoyed. ~ '

Some eight months ago, Mr. W. P.
Stephens bought of Charles Porter, color
ed, a fine gold watch, set with a diamond,
giving in exchange a fine slver watch
and $35. Since Porter has been shown
up as a dealer in stolen watches and jewel
ry, a description of this watch was sent to
Chief Connally, of Atlanta. On last
Friday, Mr. E. A. Franklia, of Birming
ham, Ala., came to Marietta and claimed
the watch, giving a description of it. Mr.
Stephens gave up the watch, although it
leaves him out of pocket $7O.

The county tax receiver has finished
his digest, and the aggregate value of the
property for the year 1889, foots up $,:-
828,552. Gain over last year of $113.214.
As there is a gain of $166,807 in the city
of Marietta over last year, as per the city
clerk’s digest, it shows that there is. a
falling off in the county outside of Ma
rietta,
The Woman'’s Building Fund Society of
the Baptist Church will meet at the resi
dence of Mrs. Mattie Dobbs this Thursday
at4:3o p. m. All the lady members of
the church are requested to be there, as
business cf importance is to be transacted.

for Van's Valley, near Cave Springs, Ga.,
where she has a flonrishing school. Miss
Mirnie isa young lady of fine literary
gifts, well educated, sweet and amiable,
and fully competent to teach. Her many
friends here wish her great success.

Judge C. C. Winn and family, have re
turned from a two weeks' sojourn in the
mountains of North Georgia and North
Carolina. He had a tent along and camp
ed out and enjoyed the tour amazingly.

of ball on last Friday afternoon, result

School Books sold and exchanged a

Tae unknown white man who claimed
the ox team in Gritter district last week,
and defied arrest, with 2 knifein his hand
and a pistol in his pocket, reported for
trial before Squire York, but the evidence
was insufficient to conviet him for m-lliugi
whisky, and he was discharged. He gave
his name as Bill Mitchell, and his home
in Milton county. As soon as he was
discharged, Sheriff McLain and Constable
Moon, of this place, arrested him on the
charge of carrying concealed weapons.
They brought Mitchell to Marietta and
placed him in jail. He hada preliminary
trial before Justice Baber on Friday
morring last and was bound over. Fail
ingto give bond, he was remanded to jail, !
Mg. A. T. Davis, a drummor for Percy
W. Rose & Co, of Atlanta, was taken
sick in Alabama, came to Atlanta and re
mained three weeks. Getting no bet er
he came to Marietta. He stopped igh
Mr. L. 8. Cox and received medieal treat
ment from Dr. Gober. He was delirious
with fever most all the time. Meningitis
developed and he died on last Saturday
morning. He was about 40 years old,
and unmarried. His remains were ship
ped to Hogansville, Troupe county, Ga.,
hig former home for interment.

Diep—On Saturday afternoon at this
place, Mr. J. D. Buice, aged 52 years.
Mr. Buice had but recently moved to our
town from Atlanta, His wife died about
two months ago, and this trouble, aided yv
liver disease, hastened hLis death. He was
a mest excellent man, a Mason and a
Knight of Honor. He leaves several chil
dren, among them Mrs, Dr. 8. G. Mozley,
of this place. His funeral took place
Sunday afternoon, after which his remains
were placed to restin the city cemetery,

Mrs, 8, E. Mullins and daughter, Kate,
are spending some weeks in the moun
tains of North Georgia, stopping at Ball
‘Ground, with Dr. Hawkins, and will visit
Tate, Jasper and White Path, before re
turning,
WEe are informed that Rev. Mr. Martin,
who was deposed from the Baptist minis
try at Waco, Texas, recently for preach
ing rebaptism, arrived at Woodstock, Ga ,
joined the Baptist church there and was
licensed 1o preach, until he could be re
ordained.
