It is always easy when a rumor is be
ing circulated that tends to injure the
character and social standing of an in
dividual in a community to make a bad
matter worse by helping spread the
scandalous report. It is not necessary
to know a single fact in connection with
the matter in order to keep the ball
rolling ; in truth, the less that is known
the more that is heard. And in a great
many cases it is found on investigation
that the evil reports have no founda
tion whatever.
