Rev. A. J. Morgan, of Smyrna,
filled his appointment at the Bap
tist church Saturday aud Sunday.
Eugene Roberts and wife, of
Augusta, are visiting his mother,
Mre. A. Roberts.
R. H. Cox, who is 80 vears old,
and one of our most highly re
spected citizens, had a very nar
row escape from death on the Tth
inst. He was in his buggy driv
ing a very gentle mule, and start
ed across the railroad crossing
near the A. C. Cox gin, when in
the center of the track, the local
freight train on side track, hacked,
running into Mr. Cox’s buggy,
dragging him, buggy and mule
some 80 feet, when the' fireman
saw the accident. The buggy was
entirely demolished, Mr. Cox re
ceived some slight injuries and
was badly shocked, and the n ule’s
legs were skinned some, but not
otherwise hurt.
Mrs. J. H Wiliiams and son,
Jack, after several weeks’ visiting
her parents, J. W. Bennett and
wife, returned to her home in
Rome Monday. 3

Mr. Rad Steele, Sr., had a
stroke of paralysis in Atlanta last
week. He was brought here and
is at Mr. Monroe Stephens’ quite
sick.
Mrs, D. Guyton, of Atlanta, is
visiting her mother, Mrs. W. A.
Steele.
Miss Lizzie Pitner has gone to
Horse Creek, Ala., to visit her
sister, Mrs. Steve Evans.
Mr. J. W. Bennett, Sr., and Mr.
R. 8. Eidson, both Confederate
veterans and two of our most
highly respected citizens, were in
the race for mayor of our town on
the Tth inst. Mr. Bennett was the
successful candidate. The elec
tion passed off verv quietly, good
feeling prevailing between both
parties. Mr. Bennett is a native
of Cobb county and of this dis
trict, is 52 years old and one of
our most influential citizens.,
Mrs. Nellie Albert of Nashville,
Tenn., visited the famly of W. T.
Silver and J. A. Skelton here last

a well known railroad track hand,
was knocked from the lower Nick
ajack trestle, near Highlands, and
killed., He leaves a family at
Mableton. We lzarn he was sent,

threatening damage to the trestle
and how he came to be “‘rundown’’

paid a visit to his brother, J, B.
Gann, recently, and on his return
his mother, Mrs. Fanny Gann,
and his sister, Miss Julia, accom
panied him for a prolonged visit
in his adopted state. Dr. Gann
is now an eminent practitioner
and surgeon on one of the trunk
railroad systems of that state.
Mre. C. E. Pyron is vigiting at
her father’s, J. W. Ruff, for a few
‘weeks.

spending sometime with relatives
here, returned to his home last

this place, have gone to Smith
county, Texas, where they will
make their future home.

Oh yes, we had a few days rain
here last week. It appeared as
though winter had set in. Real
drizzle, drazzle, damp wet winter
days, but the sun came out,
changed the scene and variable
winds moved the clouds about and
now cooler weather prevails.

This lodge starts off with most
flattering prospecte for the New
Year.
One of our young men had a
startling experience last Friday
night. He retired early after a
hearty supper and says about mid
night he woke up scared to death,
making such a fuss until it was
necessary to give him assistance.
When he became compoged he was
asked what ailed him. He re
plied nothing, only ** "nother one
of them blamed dreams.”” He was
asked to to recall it and did so,
saying: Well, T dreampt that a
certain Smyrna man was to die,
would die if I did not eat a barrel
of cottonseed and of course 1
wanted to save his life, but when
I had eaten about a half barrel of
those blame cottonseed I began to
feel myself bursting open and just
couldn’t go any further and 1
yelled; T reckon Idid. judging
from the crowd around me. I'm
afraid that man will have to die,
I've eaten a half barrel of geed
and dogged if I tackleanother one..
They don’t taste good even in a
dream.

already. They borrowed our Greer
almanac so they could mark the
dark nights of the moon on their
calendars, aud thus be certain to
get in their cabbage, onions and
