The Washington Herald says
the world’s coal supply has been
reduced four billion tons. And we
know the location of the furnace
that consumed most of it.
The street railways of Chicago
have meade special arrangements
to run special funeral cars to the
city cemseteries. Each car will
seat forty people and contains a
special compartment for the cas
ket. Tie cost of hiring such a car
18 only about $20.00, while the reg
ular carriage hire for such an oc
casion is about $7,00 for each car
riags used. ;
Two ocean records were broken
last week The Mauretania made
the run from New York to Queens
town lin five days and five minutes.
The Lusitania, westbound, made
706 land miles in one day, nearly
four miles better than was ever
done before. This indicates a voy
age from Queenstown to New York
in congiderably less than five days.
So we have come to the five-day
schedule across the Atlantic.
President Rooseveit's insistence
upon the enforcement of the pure
food and drug law against 8 man
ufacturer of headache powders who
has been convicted under it will be
commended. The law was passed
for the purpose of protecting an
unsuspecting public against adult
erants and harmful proprietary
medical preparations, and should
be sustained vigoronsly,
Every man ought to desire to be
well-to-do. He has a right to ex
pect to be, if he is honest and in
dustrious—and his wife is thrifty.
The plain people of the south have
the great secret of success, from a
domestic standpoint, yet to learn.
It is hidden in the word ‘‘thrift.”
It is said that Benjamin Franklin
made New England wealthy by
teaching the people this lesson.
Thrift lays by a little money, no
matter how little, and is not dis
couraged if the pile does not grow
as fast as hope had hadit. Thrift
buys a homeo, even if fine dresses
and costly parties have to be dis
pensed with. Thrift never wastes
anything; it saves the odds and
ends, making use of the scraps,
whether they are of clothes, or
victuals, or time. Thrift educates
the children, if not at great
echools, in the neighborhood
school house; if not there, in the
home. Write that word large
above your heart-stone: THRIFT.
If a man 18 down, don’t kick
him further; give him another
chance. It may be his first of
fense, and at heart he may be good
and strong and clean; he may have
been too strougly tempted, and
have fallen, o 1 in a moment of
blind passion, aroused by some In
justice or injury, he may have
struck down his fellow man., Take
the human heart, its failings and
passions into consideration before
you judge a man, and consider that
you might have done the same un
der the same circumstances; then
give him another chance. You
may be wrong in doing 80, but it
18 better to err on the right side
than or the opposite one. If you
would hold out a strong, helping
hand to your falien fellow man,
many would be saved to be made
good, useful men; but should you
turn your back on him and con
demn him for the oune error, he
would probably go further on
down, down, and yours would be
the blame. sy
J. M. BROWN FOR GOVERNOR.
To the People of Georgia:—Al
though I have unexpectedly re
ceived & great number of letters,
petitions and epoken requests rep
resenting many thousands of peo
pie, a large majority of whom are
farmers, laboring men, manufac
turers and business men, to allow
the use of my name as a candidate
for Governor of Georgia, subject
to the primary of June 4, as com
pliance with involves possibly al
change iu the practices and plans
of a lifetime, I have refrained from
announcing a decision, hoping
that some other candidate would
come to the front, But, as that
hope has not been realized, 1 have
been forced to the conclugion that
it 18 my duty to obay the call
which my fellow-citizens have
made,
In determining the question of
the advisability of making the
race, I carefully considered the
claim of certain adherents of the
present administration, that the
fixed policy of the State is to give
the incumbent of the Governor’s
office a second term as a matter of
course, since the adoption of the
constitution of 1877.
That instrument limits the term
to two years, and precedent can
not amend it so as to stretch a
term into four years. And if it
could, the best interests of the
people demand its revocation when
the administration involved, ei
ther through design or lack of
knowledge, has wrought disaster
to the prosperity of the people.
Government should not only be
‘““of the people’’ but ‘‘for the peo
ple.”
Furthermore, in his published
statement that he would not enter
the race for United States senator,
the present Governor did not base
his declination on the ground that
he was under an obligation of
honor to sorve the second term.
That declinaticn was upon an en
tirely other reason. Hence, if he
be free to ignore it, how can it be
binding on the Democratic party
as to his? If he has the option to
accept 1t or not, the party has the
option to tender it or not.
But in his speech at Decatur,
March 9th, he enumerated among
other official plans he has for the
future the enactment of the so
called ‘“‘port rates.”” These rates,
if made effective, means the ruin
of the industries of Georgia, and,
as a corollary the destruction of
the nearby markets for farmers of
our own State, it 1s therefore im
perative to Georgia that this plan
should be made impossible for ful
fillment since the mers threat of
it and kindred declarations has
wrought serious disaster to our
people.
If elected, I shall give the peo
ple an administration character
-Ized by the strictest economy, and
shall favor the following:
- 1. A return tothe payment in
one sum of Confederate pensions,
such as prevailed before the advent,
of the present administration
2. The reduction of taxation as
quickly and to as great an extent
as can ke made practicable.
3. The regulation of the rail
roads. This should be done with
fairness, but with judgment, hold
ing equally in mind the right of
the public who travel and ship, of
the stockholders who own the
properties, and of the lives and
fair wages of the employes.
4. The proper support of all pub
lic inssitutions.
. As liberal appropriations for
common schools as the public fi
nances will allow.
6. Changes in the Railroad Com
mission law, viz: First, the repeal
of those parts which give the Com
mission jurisdiction over such lo
cal institutions as telephones, gas
and electric lighting plants, cot
ton compresses, and street rail
ways. Secondly, to insert the re
quirement that one of the com
sioners shall be a rate expert, and
to repeal that section providing
for a rate expert not a commis
sioner; thus saving $4,000 per an
num in that office. Thirdly, to
compel railroads to properly light
and heat passenger stations, and
to require demurrage rules.
7. The establishment of a De
partment of Labor.
8. The strict enforcement of the
present prohibition law, If the
people in the coming election
choose members of the general as
sembly who, in accordance with
the will of their. constituents,
make any changes in the present
law, I will sign the bill thus or
dered by the people.
9. The enactment of a law
against lobbying, 8o a 8 to preserve
the purity of our legislative sys
tem, the same as the purity of our
jury system.
10. The encouragement by a
proper adminietration of the laws
of the agricultural, mercantile and
manufacturing industries of the
State. The assurance, not only to
the citizens of this State, but to
citizens of other States, that all
capital invested in legitimate en-
t terprises in Georgia shall have the
equal protection of the laws and
the equal friendly consideration of
Georgia.
11, The discouragement by all
legal methods of undesirable im
migration.
1 make no promise that J indi
vidually, or in my official capacity,
will accomplish the results above
indicated, for while one man, if
he be governor, may cripple, and
possibly wreck the prosperity of
the State, it requires the co-opera
tion of the people and the execu
tive to restore confidence and up
build that which has been pros
trated. Hence, I should ask your
earnest co-operation. T confess
that I have none of the arts of the
politician and no great newspaper‘
to urge my candidacy, but I have
faith in the people. |
In conclusion, let us unite to
prove that Georgia will be just t.o‘
all citizenship or investments that
are within her borders. ILet us
unite to restore employment with
good wages to those who are now
the unmerited victims of an un
necessary panic. Let us unite to
prevent cotton from falling vo an
unprofitable price. Let us unite
to bring back prosperity to Geor
gia.
Respectfully, your fellow-citizen,
(Signed) Josepr M. Brownx.

YOU MERCHANT,
Just let the people gain the im
pression one time that your busi
’ness is not paying, that you are go
-Ing backwards instead of forwards
that you are blue and impetuous
and that you are pressed for
money and you have done enough.
The rest will be done by the sher
iff and the court officers. People
love to trade and do business with
a concern that is prosperous, grow
ing, pushing, succeeding and that
is optimistic. Buyers like sheep,
flock together and they flock to
the house that is advertising and
bidding for trade. They will not
excuse the merchant who for the
sake of saving a few dollars re
trenches in the dull season, cutting
down his usual number of clerks,
failing to dress his show windows
and stopping all his advertising.
Nothing succeeds like success and
nothing attracts the people like
apparent success. If you are not
making money you must at least
try to keep up appearances and
give the impression that you are.
When your heart sinks within you
—it may seem strange, but it is
ever the case—the hearts of all
your customers surn from you.—
