STABS HIS WIFE. 1
: |
He is Arrested and Dies
in Jail in a Few Hours
Thereafter.
On last Friday morning Sheriff Me-
Kinney was called to the Belmont place,
owned by Mr.J. Gid Morris. A negro
man named Aaron Burks had become
engaged in an angry quarrel with his
wife about the door of the house being
found open next morning, accusing her
of not closing it the night before, when
she had retired. She denied the accu
sation, and replied that he was the last
one to come in. At this, he opened his
pocketknife, it is alleged, and etabbed
hie wife in the abdomen, making a dan
gerous wound.
Burks was arrested and brought to
Marietta and placed in jail.
After Burks was arrested, he wrote a
letter to his mother in Augusta, telling
her that the stabbing was an accident ;
that he and his wife were playing when
he cut her, but he guessed he would
have to do time for it. s
- On the same day about 2 o’clock, it
‘was reported to the jailer that Burks
had suddenly died in jail. Judge P. D.
MecCleskey had a jury summoned and
an inquest was held, the verdict being
that Burks died from heart trouble.
The wounded woman will recover.
Leake place, on Church
street. Possession at once.
The place will be put in
first-class condition. Ap
