AN ACT to authorize the Postmaster General to
employ special agents to superintend and se
cure the certain and speedy transportation ot
the mails across the Mississippi river in the Con
federate States.
The Congress of the Confederate States of
America do enact, That the Postmaster Geneial
be, and he is hereby authorized to employ such
special agents as he may deem necessary, to super
intend and secure the speedy and certain trans
portation of the mails across tiie Mississippi river,
in the Confederate States, at such points as may
be found practicable for that purpose.
Sec 2. And be it further enacted. That such
agents shall receive the same pay and allowance
for their services as is paid and allowed to special
agents of tiie Post office Department, and that
this Act shall continue in force during the exis
tence of the present war between the United
States ami the Confederate States.

Superintendent of tbs “army intelligence office,”
and liis clerks, at the discretion of tbe Secretary
of War, and under such regulations as mav be
prescribed by him, aud that the extra pay allowed
said clerks shall be and is hereby increased from
twenty-five to fifty cents per day.

appoint a Secretary, at an annual salary of a thou
sand dollars, to be paid quarterly. But the said
Secretary shall hold bis place at the pleasure of
