The Petersburg Express has the Bal
timore American of the 15th. Its Yan
kee editor. C. C. Fulton, was an eye
witness of the late fight, and is greatly
chagrined at the terrible castigation in
flicted by the Charleston batteries on
the invulnerables. Fulton takes the
affair more to heart, because he Has
repeatedly told the American recently,
through his Hilton Head correspon
dence, that the fall of Charleston was
a fixed fact—that the fleet would
kuiHv no such word as fail, and weio
bound to conquer. Hear how he

We are still stationary, the Ironsides
and the Monitors retaining their posi
tion in front of Morris Island. The
preparations to leave are, however,
progressing slowly, as usual in all nav
al operations here, as the use of the
Ericsson raft and torpedo for blowing
up the Keokuk has been abandoned,
a further delay of three or four days
other parties who had an interest in
deceiving us*. They had represented
torpedoes manufactured out of steam
boilers, twenty feet long, filled with
powder, acres and tons offish nets, and
all manner anil variety of devilish con
trivances which were to blow our iron-
cla Is out of water—sharp pointed
stakes Which were to pierce their hulls
and a rain of bombshells to crush their
decks. Indeed, there is no doubt that
the autliorities of Charleston relied as
much on the fear of obstructions as
they did on the obstructions them
selves, and the imaginary torpedoes
have done their work most efteetual-

Another cause of the want of suc
cess in this movements has been the
antipathy existing among the high
functionaries of the navy to Ericsson
and his Monitors. They look upon
these vessels as destin'd, if successful,
to do away with quarterdeck grand
eur and the dignity of high rani#—
They were opposed to gaining victo
ries through engineering skill and by
Yankee inventions.—Ericsson and his
Monitors are spoken of as curses to the
navy, and notwithstanding the im-
