A man in thc neighborhood, named
Hays, had a bull that he was in the habit
of liding to mill with his hag of com, and
he detennined to enter linn for the race.
He said nothing about it to anyone, but
he rode him around the tiack a number of
times on - several moonlight nights, miiil
the bull had the hang of the ground pretty
well, and” would keep the right course.—
He rode with spurs which the bull consid
ered disgreeahle; so much so that he al
ways bellowed when they were applied to
his sides.
On the morning of the race, Hays came
upon the ground on horseback—on his
bull. Instead of a saddle, he had dyied an
oxhide, the head part of which with’the
horns still on, he placed upon the hull’s
rump. He carried a short tin horn in his
hand. He rode to the Judge’s stand and
offered to enter his bull for the race, hut
the owners of the horses that were entered
objected. Hays appealed to the terms
of the notice, insisting that his hull had
“four legs, and hair on,” and that lie had
a right to enter him. After a good deal
of swearing, tlie judges decided themsel v es
compelled to declare that the hull hail the
right to run, and ho was efitered accord
ingly.
When the time for starting arrived, the
hull and horses took their places. The
horse racers were out of humor at being
bothered with the bull, and at the burles
que which they supposed was intended,
hut thought that it would he over as soon
as the horses started.
When the signal was given, they did
start. Hays gave a blast with his horn,
and sunk his spurs into the sides of the
bull, who hounded off with a terrible bawl,
at no trifling speed, the dried ox hide flap
ping up and rattling at every jump, mak
ing a combination ot noises that had ne\ ei
been heard on a race course before.
The horses all flew the track, each one
seeming to he seized with a sudden defei-
ndnation to take the shortest cut to get out
oftjie Redstone country, and not one of
them could be brought back in the time to
save their distance. The purse was given
to Hays. ’
A general row ensued; hut- the fun of
the thing put the crowd on the side of the
bull. The horsemen contended that they
were swindled out of their purse, and that
if it had not been for Hays’ horn and

Upon this, Hays told them that Ins bull
could beat any of their horses, any liotw, and
if they would put up a hundred dollars j
against the purse he had won, he would j
t^kc of the ox hide, and leave his tin horn J sha!fl
and run a fair race with them. His oiler
was accepted, and the money staked.
They agvn took their places at the
starting post, and the signal was given,—
Hay3 gave the bull another touch with
the spur, and the bull gave a tiemendoiia
bellow^. The horses remembered the
dreadful sound—though all the rest was
coming as before. Away they went again,
in spite of all the exertions of their riders,
while Hays galloped his hull around the
track, and won the money.
Tub hat was passed round in a certain
congregation in one of the New lungland
States, for the purpose ot taking up a col
lection.—After it made the circuit of the
chinch, it was handed to thc minister, who
by the way, had “exchanged pulpits” with
thc regular preacher, and he found not a
penny iu it. He inverted the hat over
the ptllpit cushion an-d shook it, that its
emptiness might be known, then looking
towards the ceiling, he exclaimed, with
gieat fervor, “I thank God that I got back
my hat from this congregation.”
Do they wish a fai^ open fight, with
the odds two to one in their favor?—
Let them pitch their picks and. spades
into James River and draw out their
ine of battle on the South side. They
have an entertainment which
shall satisfy the survivors for the re
mainder of their natural lives. Our
word for it, their appetite for war will
cease from that time.
But they have enough of battle diet
already. Lieut. Russell assures us
that they are tired of butting their
heads against fortifications, and will
gladly hail the day when they can sit
down and dig, while the batteries,do
their fighting. If they prefer that
game, let them try it. The struggle
will last a little longer, but the end
.will be the same. In time and blood,
we shall make them pay roundly for
every inch they gain ; and if, eventu
ally, they get possession of the Cock
ade city (an improbable event.) they,
will have buried before its walls twice
as many men as Grant bad in the be
ginning of the campaign, and four
times as many as the Yankees can af
ford to lose,
