Look beyond the Surfacr.
Is it right for young ladies to appear in public
on l he stage ? By all the glories of a maiden’s
blush. I humbly say, no. By all the charm of
woman’s modesty, I humbly suggest that it is de
cidedly wrong. By so doing, a gradual, almost
i-mperceptible influence steals over the soul —
Great God ! destroying, or at least searing the
finer feelings of her nature- Appearing once or
twice may not do so—constantly, certainly does.
And this being the tendency, once is wrong.—
W ere I inclined, I could advance what I "have
myself seen, ns proof positive, of what I state ;
but as it might be a little personal, I refrain.
Time and again have tiie fair daughters of my
birth place—dear old Milledgeville, charmed us
with their delightful conceits. Yes', and from
most patriotic, Christian motives. They were
given.superintended too, by noble women. The
end, however, does not always justify the means.
Oh ye, w ho are to be ihe mothers of our rising,
beloved Confederacy—ye who are to be our wives,
are irjuring yourselves. Let us raise the money
in some other way, tind cultivate, by every means
possible, true modesty, delicate sensibility iu
our women. I, lor one Confederate soldier, say,
do not supply ^giy wants by robbing woman’s
soul. No, for no rouse.
Mothers, I pledge my life, mv heart, n y soul to
