While wc admit that honest men will always di: chargc their obligations, provi ded it i: in their power, we do say that one c!a s would never pay a debt unless forced by lhe law. Some of these very men have carried their cotton to market, since the close of the war, and sold it for gold and placed it in their pockets and bade tlicir creditors help themselves, al though they had twice dollars enough to pay every debt they owed. Arc such liu n'ilutitlnd to leniency ? Would it be a hardship to require them to pay their debts instanter? Is it the policy of the law to encourage such in their dishon- iwty? Wc do not favor the opening of the collecting law fully, hi cause it would enable heartless creditors to take toD many advantages of good men; yet for the purpose of reaching and amusing some individuals, we do think that credi tors should he permitted to collect speci fied sums of their indebtedness. The dishonest must be taught that the law will ft rca them to discharge their duties to creditors. Once this truth is forced upon their minds, they will no longer keep their money lying in their pockets, while the amount of interest is daily in creasing. The people must not forget that a portion of the citizens of Georgia have all their effects in notes, and if they arc not allowed to collect a small amount great injustice will be done them class is as much entitled to the pirotiction of law as any other. given in our first article, viz: make a voluntary surrender of radicalism, and not force the moderate men to rout the party horse, foot and dragoon.
