The Congressional Oath. The Atlanta Intelligencer, in a digni fied and respectful article, urges the elec tion of those only who can take the test oath. On this subject we differ from our cotemporary. If we elect delegates to Congress who can take the oath, they will not only fail to represent, but will misrepresent us. Would a failure to have representation be as great a calamity as misrepresentation ? Besides these men would oppose the repeal of the test oath, for its continuance would make sure their hold on office. Therefore, would it not be better to elect those whose views and feelings coincide with their constituents’, and settle the question at once whether the people will ever be entitled again to representation, than send delegates whose principles and interest arc adverse to those of the voters, even though the so-called represents!ivos he permitted to take their sent* ,iu Congress. What earthly good can the people <d Georgia derive from the admission into Congress of delegatis from our State, unless those delegates endorse our views and give their support to measures calculated to advance our interests ? On the contrary, if our dele gates differ from us in views and policy, and vote accordingly, is it not manifest that we will be datuaged by representa tion? Hence if we cannot be represented, let us take care that we be not misrep resented. will witness the release of Mr. Davis is : not distant in the future. Jefferson Davis. No one in Georgia heard with more pleasure the news of Mr. Stephen’s re lease from confinement than wc. In so doing, .Mr. Johnson not only performed an aet of justice and humanity, but one calculated to advance his popularity and go far towards restoring the broth erly feelings that existed in the purer and earlier days of the Republic..— There is one more act in his power—one more act of humanity—one more act of forgiveness that yet remains to be done— thefull and complete pardon of Jefferson Davie. The Southern people must be either happy, law-abiding or discontented citi- sens. God knows we have suffered enough in the past. Our homes and cities have been burned, our fields devastated, our slaves emancipated, and many of the flower of our chivalry lie upon more than one hundred battle fields and in the cemeteries of Northern prisons. Add to this the keen mortification felt at our final defeat, and we ask, in the name of all that is just, is not the picture dark enough ? If the Government can, consistently with its dignity and power, alleviate our sorrows and suffering, who would be hard hearted enough to say nay ? It is useless to deny that in the hours of prosperity Mr. Davis possessed the admiration and love of this people, and in adversity he has their sincere sympathy.
