More About the Hampton Roads Con
ference.
The curtain of mystery enveloping the
celebrated ‘•Hampton Roads Conference,”
held last year, President Lincoln and Mr
SeWard representing one side, and Messrs.
Stephens, Hunter and Campbell, the
other side, has just been partially lifted
by the‘'knowing” men at the North.—
Mr. Montgomery Blair alleges, that his
father was instrumental in bringing about
the meeting. The object was to induce
Mr. Davis to take the Confederate army
to Mexico, and there employ it in expell
ing the French, and to allow the Union
to be re-established, as of old, Mr. Blair
alleges that Mr. Davis eagerly caught the
idea, but in his instructions to his repre
sentatives, insisted on an armistice be
tween the “ tiro countries," notwithstand
ing Mr. Lincoln’s note of invitation men
tioned as a sine qva non to political inter
course, the recognition of “ Our one com
rnon eountrv.” Both parties were firm
in their respective purposes and nothing
came of the meeting. Mr. Seward, how
ever wrote the very next day, a letter to
the American minister in England, in
which lie alleged that the Confederates
bad in view “some extrinsic enterprise or
plan.” This dispatch was couched in
such language as to convey the impress
ion that a settlement between the North
ern and Southern belligerents might have
beeu-arrivcq at, but for the rejection (on
Mr. Seward's part) of this proposed Con
federate enterprise, and hinted mysteri
ously that this great “ extrinsic enterprise
or plan” was the occupation of Canada,
aid not the invasion of Mexico. The
dispatch was published, and the Emperor
