Under the system of slave labor and c!:«ap cotton, no one w.-ms reckoned a plan ter who did not control the label* of a doz en or a score of hands. Thc culture of cotton paid when (lie land was good, and the farm hands numerous and owned, not withstanding the almost nominal price which the raw staple was sold at by pro ducers. Now with the logs of slave labor, ha- come to our relief great enhancement in the price of cotton; and it is really questionable whether our people are alive to their gains. Let us examine into the matter to see if agricultural employments would not pay, whether viewed on their own merit- at the present tune, or in com parison with such oc£Bpaftmn as have itiOI^JO ihem.-itfThow and eclat than of real merit. Thc best farmers with glare labor rais ed eight bales of cotton to the hand, be sides, a plenty of pruvi.-ion? for a year a head. In the meantime iIn ir cattle inetea-ed in number, their sheep multi plied, their oichard- grew, their vineyards flourished. The cotton crop was all gain. The best land yielded a bale to the acre— their poorest a third of a bale. If the farmer should now apply himself a-sidu- ously to thc work, lie might be expected to do its wi il as one of his negro*s former ly did—with th** difference in his favor of cotton at ten cents a pound and cotton at forty cents a pound. Should, ,tlion, a farmer wotk on his plantation, without any help, lie might raise eight hales of cotton, which would bring him in at the close ol the yea* - sixteen hundred dollars, and, in addition, might, the same yea", raise all the provisions necessary for liis family. If lie has sots to help him, his profits might be proportionnbiy increased. If he hired help, the sutnc result would follow. Now what young man can calculate, with any certainty on sucli success, in any calling which he may choose to- fol low ? One of the sick whose eves were al ready darkened by the approach of reath, ’answered a question of the Empress with **• Uni, ma soeur.” “ My friend,”said the Sister of Charity, “ it is the Empress who speaks to you, not I.” “ Iloti't recall that word,’ said the Empress hastily, it is i : the ewcetrsi name you can give me.”—j : This spontaneous expression of kindness .
