Josh, I’m first in with the gals—in course

Off went coat, pants, shoes, kc. Just
as Miller had doffed everything, but his
short red flannel shirt—bang !—bang !—
who-o-wo-ya! went two, three and four
more guns—loud and more shrill rose the
terrible wurhoop in the dcusc brush under
the hank.
“ Oh, Lord I I'm a dead man, groaned
James Simpson.
“ My leg is broken! Oh, save me !”
•aid Goorge Williams.
“ Run for life, men ! run Mercy’s sake

All was said in an instant—do you seo

hideous crjr.
“ Oh, Lord !” grunted Miller redoub
ling his speed, the red blaze getting lar
ger, and bunches of his busjt hair drop
ping out as he spread himself—see him
leap the yard fence, high in the air, red
shirt and all.
The porch was full of ladies—off went
two or throe moro guns—M. glanced at
the ladies and then at his short flannel
shirt.
“ Run for your life, M. J” sceamed
Betty, “the house ia full of Indians;
father is dead and brother Sam is woun
ded. Run ! Speed !”
In the twinkling of an eye M. was oat
of the yard, and supposing the premises
surrounded ; off he shot—the red blaze
more brilliant than ever—and striking
for the thick thorny bottom, he reached
and swam the river, and although it was
nearly sunset, M. got into a settlement
fifty miles distant to breakfast next morn
ing, still retaining the sleeves and collar
of his red shirt, and reported all the fam
ily, visitors, (to., among the slain. As
for himself, he said he had fought as long
as fightiug would do any good.
It is unnecessary to inform yon whether
or not Betty was ever troubled with M.
after that snap.
Saving Bacon.—A correspondent of
What did Tiiad. Stevens mean ?
Accidental Shot and Narrow Es
cape or a Governor.—Yesterday as
the passenger train on the Mobile & Ohio
Railroad was coming up near Citronelle,
a soldier was putting up his gun into the
rack of a car next in front of the ladies’
car, and by accident it was discharged.
The ball entered the ladies’ car 'through
the glass of the right hand window,
ranging down through and amongst the
heads of the passengers on that side of
the ear. It first gently grazed a gentle
man's hat; about midway down it paid
its compliments to a gentleman’s coat
sleeve, whieh was thought to have suffi
ciently changed its direction to save Gov.
Patton, of Alabama, who was seated in
the rear of the car. It passed over his
head.—Meridian Messenger, 3d.
TnK Test Oath.—A dispatch from
Washington, dated the 1st inst., says :
To-morrow the constitutionality of the
test oath is to be argued before tho Su
premo Court after nearly three months
delay. The original argument was con
ducted before eight of the Justices, and
it is understood they arc divided in opin
ion. The argument is expressly for the
benefit of Justice Grier, who inclines to
the opinion that the oath is unconstitu
tional, but declines to decide without
having the case argued at length.
Wasiunoton, March, 6.—The Senate
was engaged to day in the discussion of
the constitutional amendment.
In the hlousc a report was made from
the Committee on Reconstruction, em
bracing voluminous testimony, the wit
nesses testifyin^Tls to the presumed dis
loyalty of the majority of the people South
The army appropriation bill was passed
with an amendment disallowing pay to
any cadet appointed since Jan. 1st 1800.
