A Place of Public Resort.
A number of our citizens has in con
templation the preparation of a place of
public resort on the land of Mr. Tucker,
who has kindly donated it for that purpose
—located about a mile and a half west of
the Court House, in the fork of the Frank
lin and Carrollton roads. It is the design
of these gentlemen to open tracks a mile in
length, over which our citizens can lidcand
drive at pleasure. Near them is a spring of
excellent water located in a beautiful
grove. Tt will be a delightful place at
which to spend a few hours of the morn
ings and evenings of the spring and
summer months. These tracks will bo
converted in the future into Fair Grounds
if such a step would receive the sanction
and approval of the people generally.
It will require some funds to open the
ball; and we arc requested to autiounce
that those favorable to the cause will meet
in the Court House, at 10 o’clock, A. M.,
Wednesday next, for the purpose of rais
ing the requisite amount, appointing
eeaiiLittees to superintend the work, etc.
There is no doubt, however, that the
111 nicy will be raised, the tracks opened
and other appropriate work done at an
early day.
of hostile fleets; that there are more Fe
mans in London, thoroughly organized,
i than there are in Dublin ; that they are
1 numerous in other English cities
j they will move in concert with the
at home, and furnish employment for an
English army within her own limits : that
when the struggle begins, the poor and
oppressed, of England, will catch inspira
tion from the republican spirit of the
j Irish, and join the contest for liberty.
Stated that what the Fenians in their
native land need, and what they arc await
ing is arms. Sixty thousaud Enfield ri
fles used by the Confederate armies in
their struggle for their independence are
now in irqkyiq; these arc ufrfc. sufficient,
and therefore they appeal for aid to their
brethren, and their descendants in Amer
ica ; that Ireland could not now recede
without bringing ruin upon her fortunes,
and dishonor to her name; that strike
she will, with or without arin3.
Gave an interesting account of the ar
rest, imprisonment and escape of Stephens,
the great leader of the revolution, and
proved by his account, that it was the re
sult of the fact that the police, the
people and even the army of Britain
are feuianized.
Discussed the probability of England
forming alliance -with the leading nations
of the earth to aid in suppressing the
Irish, and concluded that the house of
Hanover, aud about four thousand Dutch,
would be the only favorable respondents
to her request. If Napoleon should con
sent to such an alliance,.which he did not
beleive he would, the barricades, on the
morning following, in the streets of Paris,
would prevent.his escaping with his life;
that while France was in name an em
pire, her people are republicans in spirit
and in action. Felt confident that she
would find no sympathy in the United
States, for her treachery to the late con
tending panties here, is now manifest to
both, who indulge for her neither sympathy
nor respect. To this sentiment the spea
ker met a cordial response. He coutiuu-
ed this branch of his speech until it seem
ed apparent that none of the great powers
of the earth would assist in the suppres
sion of the Irish in' this movement for
theircmancipation from the yoke of tyran
ny, and the establishment of a Republic
of their own.
The speaker appeared suguine of the
early success of the Feuiau plan, and we
think inspired many of his auditors with
similar hopes. Hi3 address was extreme
ly interesting, and afforded us the long
desired opportunity of learning direct
from a talented member of the order, what
are the ends aimed at and the real and
prospective means relied on, by the F’e-
nian brotherhood, for the attainment of
those ends,
At the conclusion of his speech he ex
hibited Irish bonds, some of which were
sold, but how many we did not learn.—
He stated that the principle object of his
missiuu among us, was the formation of
Fenian circles, lie proposes to organize
one in Atlanta before taking Lis final
leave.— Commercial Bulletin.

A letter goes the round of the papers,
written by the great political preacher of
the West, Dr. Robert J. Breckinridge, on
the all-absorbing topic.of the day: what
is to be done with the negro? The con
clusion he reaches is that the distinction
of color must be recognized and sustained
—not abolished—otherwise there is no
possible .chance of improving the condi
tion of bis race in this country. Doctor
Breckinridge, it will be recollected, is an
out-and-out Whig of the old school, and,
during the war, was one of the bitterest
enemies of the South.

A Fenian Address in Atlanta.
A speech of about two hours length
delivered at the door of tb. City Hall,
on Saturday night last, by Mr. Tooliy,
who is, we understand, a representative
-1 the Fenian Brotherhood. Quite
number oi citizens and soldiers were in
^tendance, a 'i of which seemed pleased
A'u' C * ; - CtS aDC * of the address.
The history of Ireland, in her character
an independent nationality, and also
a dependency of Great Britain, was
‘.uewed. The speaker represented as a
orgery ^he pretended edict of Pope
Mr. Stephens Before the Reconstruction
Committee.
Associated press dispatches of the IGth
give the substance of Hon. Alexander H.
Stephens testimony before tho Committee
on Reconstruction. He had conversed
fully and freely with prominent men in
Georgia and had met with a great many
prdminent individuals at Miledgeville not
connected with the Legislature, and it
was his decided opinion, from conversations
and correspondence, that an overwhelm
ing majority of the people of Georgia
were exceedingly anxious for a restoration
of the government, for the State to take
her former position in the Union, to have
her Senators and Representatives admit
ted to Congress, aud to enjoy her rights
and discharge her obligations as a State
under .the constitution of the U. States as
aiuended-
He believed that the sentiment of the
people of Georgia, when they resorted to
an exercise of the right of secession, was
a desire to render their liberties and in
stitutions secure, with the belief on their
part that such a stop was absolutely ne
cessary for that object.
llc*furtber believes that their opinion
now is, that the surest, if not the only
hope for their liberties is in a restoration

of the Constitution of the United States
and the Union under it.
He believes the people sufficiently sat
isfied with the experiment, and will never
resort to that mode of* redress again by
force. Whatever may be their abstract
views on the subject, they have come to
the conclusion that it is better to appeal
to reason and justice in the halls of legis
lation and the courts for the preservation
a of the principles of constitutional liberty,
than to arms. The idea of secession is
totally abandoned.
Jefferson Davis.—The Baltimore
correspondent of the New Orleans Pica
yune, says:

pertaining to his Profes
sion, with neatness and dispatch.
He respectfully refers to the following tes
timonials :
Dr. J. W. W:ley.—The Full Set of Teeth
yon made for my wife about 8 years ago, are
all that could be desired. They are pronoun
ced by all who have seen them as beautiful, and
as to" their durability and usefulness, I would
state, they never have needed repair, and that
mv wife’s health has been transformed from
bail to good, owing no doubt to their perfect
adaptability to mastication. Wm G. Hebbing.
My wife had been afflicted with a nervous
head ache for more than a year, caused from
indigestion consequent upon the loss of teeth.
Dr. Wiley inserted a set of Artificial Teeth,
and it was but a few weeks when we discover
ed quite an improvement in her health. She
is now enjoying robust health, and I believe is
purely indebted-to his skill in assisting nature
tn the discharge of a proper mastication.
J. II. Graham.
With pleasure we recommend Dr. Whilev as
a scientific Dentist. He is not oniy entitled to
the patronage of the Southern people as being
a regular graduate in his profession, but, from
his devotion and self sacrifice to the cause of
our once happy South. It we forego merit for
charlatanism from personal feelings, let as con
sider the appreciation of those who gave their
support in our struggle for Southern indepen
dence. Every one admits that he makes bet
ter and prettier sets of Teeth than any one
else : and those employing his services wR?
get value received for their money. We ten-
him this testimonial unsolicited.
