The Pic-nic.
On May-day the members of the three
Sabbath Schools in this city united in a
Pic-nic celebration. At 8 o’clock they
assembled at the Baptist Church, and
were entertained for a short time by the
Rev. .James Stacy in a brief, pointed ad-
dress, replete with line thought and sound
advice.
The little folks then marched in pro
cession to a beautifiul grove about a mile
east of the Court House, where seats were
prepared for the weary and tables for the
dinner. Ere long the latter were loaded
with every thing that could please the
palate or tempt the appetite, and the as
sembly, numbering about three hundred,
were invited to partake, and on all sides
handsome compliments were paid the
dinner. The festivities of the day then
closed, and each one carried homo a
lighter and happier heart.
Superior Court.
A special term of the {Superior Court
fur this county will convene on Monday
next, tor the trial of criminals confined
in jail. All persons interested in cases
of jail delivery are notified to attend.
The Crops.
There is great complaint among our
farmers about the cotton plant coming up
and then dying. This fact is attributa
ble to defective seed. The planters in
all the Southern States have been forced
to encounter the same difficulties, and
hence there is every prospect, at present,
that not more than a hall crop will be
raised, even when the yield of the same
quantity of land as is now in cultivation
in former years is taken into consideration.
The prospect of a large wheat crop in
this section of Georgia is good.
The Flirt.—There is an Eastern fa
ble of a magician who discovered by his j
incantations that the philosopher’s stone j
lay on the bank of a certain river, but
was unable to determine its locality more i
definitely. He therefore proceeded along !
the bank with tf piece of irmi to which he
applied successively all the pebbles he
found. As one after another they pro
duced no change in the metal, he flung
them into the stream. At last be hit up
on the object of his search, and the iron
became gold in his hand. But alas! he
had become so accustomed to tho “touch
and go” movement, that the real stone was
involuntarily thrown into the river after
the others, and lost to him forever. We
think this story well allegorises the fate of
the flirt. She has tried and discarded so
many hearts that at length she throws
away the right one from pure force of
habit.
A Lucky Family.—During the last
fifty years, the luckiest family in all Eu
rope, hasheen that of Coburg. Prince
Leopold, of Saxe-Coburg, whose income
was only three hundred pounds a year,
married the Princess Charlotte, heiress of
the British throne, in 1816 ; dropped into
a pension of fifty thousand pounds lor life,
on her death, in 1816; was chosen King
of Greece in 1830, but declined the emp
ty honor; became King of Belgium iu
1831, and reigned for twenty five years,
with great success, His sister, a poor
widow, though “ a born princess,” mar
ried one of the English royal dukes, and
their only surviving child now occupies
the British throne, while her grand
daughter will some day be Queen of
Prussia. Another of the Coburg family
married a daughter of Louis Phiilippe, of
France. Yet another is father of the
present King of Portugal. Leopold’s
eldest son married an Austrian archduch
ess, and his only daughter is Empress of
Mexico.
Ex-President Buchanan has been on a
mission to Harrisburg, where he was the
guest of ex Gov. David 11. llorfccr. It is
reported the object of the mission was to
arrange matters for the gubernatorial cam
paign. The Harrisburg Telegraph inti
mates that the ex-President and the ex-
Governor intend to take tho stump for
Clymer, the Democratic nominee for Gov
ernor of Pennsylvania.
Confederate Dead in Kentucky -
Th
Versailles, Kentucky. They
Scarce nine summers ret had shed.
Youth's sweet blessings o'er thy head,
Ere the last great enemy
Cast his baleful eyes on thee.
At his touch thy roses fled,
Paled thy brow, and bowed thy head ;
Ileavrnvurd turned thy soft blue eye,
As if seeking help on high.
Folded are the waxen fingers ;
An angelic halo lingers
O'er the noble, high arched brow
Once a mother’s pride, and now
Tearful'y she sighs and gazes,
As his amber looks she raises,
Smoothing, with her soft caresses,
Ail the death-damp from his tresses.
There’s a little vacant chair,
Footsteps missing from the stair,
And his little household pet
Wondering why lie lingers yet.
Bnt to U3 remains the anguish,
For we saw him droop and languish.
Oh ! dear Father tell us why
That the fairest, soonest die !
Would the child the paths have trod
Farthest from the ways of God?
Sorer would have been our grief
If his years liad.been less brief.
Death, why passed thou heads all hoary,
Hands with brother's blood yet gory,
Forms all bowed and broken hearted,
Who with life had gladly parted;
Why the misanthrope evade,
Who lias boldly sought thy shade,
And our flower with death frost chill
Whose sweet place none e’er can fill?
Fruitless, weak, are these surmises, —
Ulessings'oft assume disguises.
Who shall dictate the disguise
But our Father, good and wise.
He who sees the sparrow fall,
Hath a guardian care for all.
Holy spirit! Heavenly light,
Plume our faith for upward flight.
Show us with thy vision keen
Our angelic child again ;
Let us hear him when he sings,
Feel the rustle of his wings,
And this will sweet comfort be
’Till him face to face we see.

Presence of Mind
Everybody lias heard how presence of
mind displayed by Sir Thomas More once
saved his life ; yet the story bears repeat
ing. Oue day while Sir Thomas was
walking on the root of his palace, lost in
contemplation, an insane man came rush
ing toward him, and threatened to push
him from the battlements. The Chancel
lor was in his gown, and besides, was old
an uuuble to struggle with such a strong
fellow, lie had a little dog with him.—
“Now,” said he to the ruauiac, “let us
throw the dog down, and see what sport
it will be ? ” So the dog was thrown
down. “ Is not this fine sport ? ” said
his lordship; “let us fetch him up and
encc. This has heretofore been only
clerical.
Rev. Dr. McTycire, of Montgomery,
offered the resolution, which was as fol
lows :
Resolved, That it is the sense of this
General Conference that lay represensation
be introduced into the Aunual and Gen
eral Conferences.
Which was carried, S9 to 48, and a
special committee was ordered, composed
of one delegate from each aunual confer
ence, to be selected by the delegates of
each conference respectively, to bring in
a plan for lay representation in accordance
with the resolution.

you made for iny wife about 8 years ago, are

as to their durability aud usefulness, I would
state, they never have needed repair, and that
my wife’s heanh ha3 been transformed from

My wife had been afflicted with a nervous
head ache for more than a year, caused from
indigestion consequent upon the loss of teeth.
Dr. Wiley inserted a set of Artificial Teeth,
and it was but a few weeks when we discover
