one, instigated by the Devil, had gone

Supreme Court—Tiie Stay Law.—
file Supreme Court, which has been in
session at Milledgeville for the past five
weeks, adjourned on Saturday last. W’e
learn that the Court made no decision on
the “Constitutionality of the Stay Law,”
which has been so elaborately argued
before it during the session.
An Eye Opener.—A Boston editor
having had his eye opened by Moore’s
history of slavery in Massachusetts, mild
ly suggests the propriety of a little more
modesty in the future on the part of
those who have so long held forth in the
holier-than-thou vein. He.says:
“ It certainly is not pleasant to admit
that in its earliest settlement, slavery was
recognized by law, aud strengthened and
made permanent by various enactments.
Mr. Moore shows that the old Puritans
not only bought and sold cargoes of Afri
cans, but, dealt in the same way v ith
their Indian captives, and even, in a lim
ited degree, with whiten, -”ho were num
bered among the dissenters and heretics
of the times, or, who could not pay their
debts. It is mortifying, again, to remem
ber that Peter Fanueil, the generous
giver of the old Cradle of Liberty to the
city, was a slave dealer.
Insanity among tiie Blacks.—The
Richmond Whig remarks that insanity is
becoming fearfully prevalent among the
freedmen. Within the month of May
some fifteen or sixteen such unfortunates
have been placed in confinement in that
city, while in former times that number
would hardly have been found in five
years.”
j^Wc.shall hear more of the “ same
sort” alter awhile. The negroe as a
slave never knew what trouble was. lie
is now thrown upon his own resources for
a support, and oftentimes fails to get
enough to eat. Ills brain was never
moulded to contend against the rude
blasts of adversity, and when sickness and
disease lay their heavy hand upon his
physical frame, his mental organization
will give way.—Fed. I mon.
