large number of stands of arms were
known to be stored, and whence a lot of
arms were secretly shipped at midnight a

while six or eight United States blue
army wagons repaired to the spot, and
the' teamsters commenced to load the
boxes of arms in the store into their wag
ons. As each wagon received its load it
was driven with an escort of policemen
to the United States arsenal below the
city. The process continued till every
box of arms in the store-house had been

The Work Resumed.*
The work on the Savannah, Griffin k
North Alabama Rail Road was resumed
last Monday, under the direction of Mr.
J - G. Sears, late of the Macon & Western
road. We admire the pluck of the new
Drcsident, and believe the cars of the S.,
G. & N. A. R. It. will be at Newnan iu
twelve months from the day the first lick ,
*as struck under his administration.
by the quiet and orderly movement
The true explanation of it, as far as
ascertained, is this:
The arms were removed by an order
from the Department headquarters, and
transferred to the arsenal, where they
will be safely kept by Gen Colender, who
will see that they do not get into the
hands of persons hostile to the Govern
ment and its frieuds. It is said that the
boxes had been carefully and secretly
prepared for shipment to various points
in the interior for arming Gov. Fletcher’s
Radical malitia, organized without law to
carry the next election. 4 he places of
destination had been marked on them,
but when the officer of the store-house
heard that the United States wagons were
coming after them, had the marks hastily
scratched off. Why he did this is a ques
tion which people will not find much dif
ficulty in answering.
The presence of the police on the
ground is accounted for by the faet^ that
they had been requested by the United
States authorities to attend to protect the
teamsters from possible disturbance.
Adjutant General Simpson came to the
place while the removal was going on,
and while he seemed to be wondering
what business Uncle Sam had to seize
Governor Fletcher s guns, it was not ob
served that he proposed to do anything to
prevent it. It was reported that the
arms really belonged to the United sta
tes Government, and that the State had
been requested before this to turn them
ovei, and having neglected to do so this
method had been adopted to get them
back. The eveut has caused great ex
citement.
Death is the common iot of humanity. Its
tread is heard alike in cottage and in palace.
Park E. Arnold is no more. The dread sum
mons came and he bowed to the mandate of
death. He was no ordinary man. Nature had
endowed him with rare qualities of mind and
body. Without the advantages of an educa
tion, he was early in life thrown out in the
world to battle for its victories, unaided and
alone. His untiring energy and sleepless
activity could not fail to insure him success.—
With him life was h success. His career is a
demonstration of wh*t “ self-made men” can
do. His influence will long be felt in the
community in which he moved and lived.—
We sincerely condole with the family in their
sad bereavement, and trust that this affliction
of Providence may be for their ete^tial good.
Oh Death ! why in thy solemn form
Invade the circle of this happy home,
And claim the honored head that long has been
The kind companion aud the generous friend.
’Tis strange, yet God is always kind and just;
In his eternal truths we put our trust.
Heart-stricken, we deeply feel the pain—
Our loss, we trust, is his eternal gain.
Then we submit. The time will come
To meet thee in thy heavenly home,
Where ail is bright to mortals given—
A home with angels saved id Heaven.
