A correspondent of the Atlanta Opinion,

many interesting items concerning the flood.— , an m!i .
At time of writing it was impo; sible to estimate | nature
the loss of property or life. Although the ex

the losses have been great. The writer says
he has not been able to ascertain definitely the
name of a single person who has been drowned.
A few persons are missing, and that is all that
is known. The military, under 3Iajor Kiiue,
acted nobly in preventing pillage. We quote:

SUFFEREKS—THE CAUSE, ETC.
It is evident that the amount of suffering is
great, but an important admission has been i
made tome by several citizens, with whom I
have conversed during the day. There are a
few worthy people who are in want, and have
had. their homes destroyed. These are work
ing, and will work, us far as able. A portion
will need assistance. Those who have been j
industrious and prudent heretofore, are in no
stiv.it beyond the discomforts arising from be
ing driven from their homes, and having fur
niture, clothing and bedding damaged or de
stroyed. There is an abundance of provisions
in the city, and all who are able and willing to
work can get them. But there are liundreds of
worthless negroes, and not a few more degra
ded whites, who have for months been depend
ing upon begging, petty thieving, and the
scanty alms dispensed by the Bureau agents, to
eke out a miserable existence. Their huts,
tents, etc., were scattered about in the most | .
