The usual method of hiring labor is from

and during tiie month of harvest he is paid
double wages, and allowed four pints of ale
daily. He works as a rule ten 1 ours per day
—that is from 6 a. m. to 6 p. m.—being al
lowed during the day two hours for refresh
ments, &c.; it he works longer, he is paid ex
tra in proportion.
Women are employed in spring and summer
for weeding, bay making, and the harvest field,
and are paid one shilling per day. Boys four
to eight shillings per week, according to age
