These figures are true and should cause our citizens to rejoice, for they exhibit the financial condition of Newnan in an enviable light. As is well known to our city readers, the city bonds are the largest item of the $541 25. The bonds which have been redeemed were burned by Ihe Finance Committee of the Coun cil, and hence it is utterly impossible for anv larger amount of the bonds to circulate than are now in existence. Is it not rather strange, under these circum stances, that the city bonds are not as current as greenbacks ? If the United States can pay $2,000,000,00(1, cannot Newnan redeem $541 25, or rather $325 75 of her bonds? It seems so truly, especially when we consider that the tax of the present year will more than absorb them. That they will he redeemed no man can doubt, and more than $541 25 is needed all the time by our business men for change. Why not consent for the city bonds to be that change? The whole truth is, with out action of the kind the functions of the city government must nearly or quite by sus pended, and leave our citizens at the mercy of noisy, disorderly blackguards and other distur bers of the peace. Are the people of Newnan ready for this ? The Marshal’s salary and other expenses of the city must be promptly met and paid, or we will have no Marshal. Surely the members of the present adminis tration command the confidence of their con stituents. Thc c ity government has been eco nomically administered. Good order h.is been preserved. The railroad bridge has been re paired, a new and substantial one has been constructed on the street leading to the ceme tery, and the indebtedness of the city reduced about $1,000. Surely the men who have done tiiis much and more for us will see to it that the last cent of the remaining debt (only $541 25) is paid. Then why not receive the city bonds at par and continue the city government in all its vigor? We think we know that the desired answer will be returned. Burke’s Weekly for Boys and Girls. To HiS Credit.—The Augusta Constitution alist says: We are not given to publishing the “last dying words and confessions” of noto rious individuals, but as the following is an evidence that the unfortunate Richardson died in his right miud, we copy it.
