The Peace that Grant Wants. ■(•WO MONTHS’ EXI-SIUKNCK }N MILITARY CONFINE MENT. To the Editor of the Constitutionalist: Your notice of me and my trial by the military authorities induce me to make public a short statement of the bitter experience of my military arrest. On the night of the 20th of April last, a soldier was killed in a negro house of ill-fame in Warren ton ; this was during the election. I had been engaged all that day at the store or H. Martiu ; at 9 o’clock I went to my room where I usually slept, and at about 11 or 12 o’clock that night a soldier came to the door, where myself and two other citizens were sleeping, and demanded entrance ; the door was opened afpl the first salutation was “one of yop inove anc| I will blow your G—d d—d brains outa musket was presented and cock: cd at our heads. 1 was ordered to get up and dress. I de manded the cause, and the reply wag, “ you will find out at the court-house.” I was con ducted to the court-house and placed under a strong guard in a room. Still no information of the cause of my arrest. Soon after tLie body of the deceased soldier was brought in and laid by my side. This and conversations heard induced me to suspect the cause of my arrest. Next morning a coroner’s jury was summoned, as I was informed. I was kept in confinement during the whole .examination ip another room, and not allowed to see friends or counsel except jn the presence of an officer. Two lving negroes, of bad character, were the witnesses against me, and no counsel allowed to be present to cross-examine them. Under what influences iliese witnesses were induced to swear away the life of ap innocent man 1 have not been able to learn. On the 28th following, I was carried by rail road to Milledgeyilje under guard, and then put into a low and damp room in the basement of the old McComb s Hotel, and then, by the order of Capt. Knapp, adjutant commanding the post, manacles were put upon roy legs. In the room were placed four or fiye soldiers un- gentleman, and we doubt not tjllg his office j der arrest; they ajjaplfed nip, kicked me, witii credit to himself aud profit to bis city — i abused and blooded me, until I yj’ag rescued by The Mayor brought his family and ie.L .... ... - ne sergeant of the guard. Till this step is taken our success is incomplete. Yours truly, [Signed] Charles Sumner. Such arc the sentiments of a leading Radical apd supporter of Grant. Such, we may fairly conclude, are Grant’s sentiments, and. such must be the sentiments then of all his sup porters. Will any Southern man vote for a candidate with such principles? If so, he must take Sumner's position and its conse quences. Andersonville. An Impartial Statement by a Union Sqlrjer. A Union soldier who e^periepced some of ihe so-called “ horrors of Anderson ville,” writes thus to the editor of the Chicago Times : Is it not time that the stereotyped cry of our “ martyred brave,^ as a political dodge, was put a stop to, and that the public were relieved from the annoyance qnd yeyqtion of these very patriotic (?) females who nave again commenced their summer campaign of canvassing for the placed on an equal footing—a thing re pulsive to the majority of soldiers; and next because Butler & Co. thought it was a bad trade to give healthy men for sick," emaciated, and disabled ones. Were we not able, heajthy, and in good condition when captured ? And was it not a dis grace to the nation, and an iusult to every soldier, to say our lives were of no oonso- quence after we were supposed to be un- qua'ified as victims for (xGant’s slaughter house ? The fuel thrown into the fire fbi the purpose of kindling hatred to the South and the Democratic party, will but fan the flame in a different direction ; and those who were prisoners will not forget Mr. Butler’s treatment before the close of the war, as well as that of fhe unwilling ex Secretary of War since their release. It is only a thorougjy unprincipled political trickstep whq pau have the bra- sen effrontery to ask the rank and file of' findipg another at the very ^cp the late army to give their support to a W ,iat color is the eye o party which has treated them as the pre sent Republican party has. But their sophistry will avail naught. The illusion that, buying up a few officers, patting the privates nu thp back, and nominating a man whom accident m4dp 4 General, are to win the votes of the disbanded army, is soon to be dispelled. We are not as ver dant and confiding as that. For the information of any that may ynard; but there is no jeweller in the world, with ail his cutting and polishing, who pould make suah 4 thing for a thousand pounds. I tell you, it is nothing less than a real Beilis Perennis.” The young people were now very curi ous, and did their best, to hasten on their uncle. William, indeed', ran forward, and before he recovered his breath began to tell his father that uncle Edward had picked up a real Beilis Perennis. “ Picked- up what?” said Mr. May nard. “ Why a real Tiellis Perennis-,. 11 replied William. “ Ue says that some people would give a hundred pounds to see it, and that no jeweller could make one like it for a thousand pounds.” Here Mr. Mayuard, much to the amaze ment of William, broke out into a fit of laughter, in the midst of which came up Edward and Lucy, with their uncle carry ing in his handkerchief the Beilis Peren nis. The curiosity of the young people was much enjoyed by Mr. Maynard and his brother Edmund ; and, for a short time, they kept up the joke which had been played off On William. Edward and Lucy. “ So, sir,” said Mf. Maynard to his brother, “ I understand you' have picked up a real Beiiis Perennis. Well do I re member seeing one-ia a deep vajley, and of a high eye of the oue you have found ?” “ Of a gold color,” replied Mr. El oign d Maynard. “ Then it piqst be alive, cried out Wil liam, hardly able to bear his patience.-— “ Please to tell me whether it has lontr applioi public wit’u the most effectual remedies that ed ucated skill can devise or art can produce, with explicit directions for their use in each and every case.
