Hu instructed all to grasp the ropes

was uttered In 1111 instant, and in less than

The voyagers made another descent, fif

to un altitude of two miles, travelling nt
the rate of thh ty miles an hour. At twcu

Having determined, says the writer to

Another Ocean Mystery.—Tlm steam

New York for Glasgow on tbo 18th of

and a goodly number of passengers. On

Hint wo know of the United Kingdom
since slm left Imr harbor in these waters.
It is now a long time sinco April 15)11*.—
April is gone ; May and June have follow
ed, and now we huvo entered upon July ;
but Urn late of tlm United Kingdom is still
unknown. 'That site has perished with all
on hoard it is now reasonable to conclude ;
but from what cause, or under wlmt clr
cumstaimcs, we me left to conjecture. On
tlm 2‘Jlh of April, six (lays after tlm Uni
ted Kingdom sailed, the City or 1’aris ar
rived in this port and reported icebergs
and heavy gales in Hm neighborhood "of
Cape Race. It is possible that tlm United
Kingdom perished amid those gales, and
probably from collision witli an iceberg.
It is hard to give up hope, but we are not
left any foundation on which longer to
lean. Like Hm Hib.trnla, of painful mem
ory, tlm United Kingdom has, no doubt,
gone down ; but, unlike Hm lliltui'iiin, has,
in nil probability, carried witli imr Imr cn
tire living freight. It is, hi fact, another
terrible sea tragedy—all tlm more terrible
iu trutli, that 110 one lias survived to tell
tho tide.
Yesterday afternoon, near the foot of

ami as ho camo out to don ids garments,

hand, and Hie finger and thumb, which
were dollnlntcd very distinctly, worn as
whitoas the skin of any Caucasian. Tlm
palm of Hm hand was there, four fingers,

years had laid a hand 011 tlm dark skill and
burned its impress into tlm flesh. During

they lost any property, ho slept with tlio

suro to dream just who took the property,
if it wits stolen, and where it then was if it

lie said he could detect a limn who want

an old peanut woman drop Imr basket from

How the singular marks came on ids breast

could see a red sjait appear after tlio touch,
uud suo almost in tlm delicato vein which

onu must difficult o< explanation, was Hm

South Carolina—Hoavy Story,
Henry H|uirnick, Commissioner of Immi

to tliut State. Wo don't know whether
Kparidek Is n negro, a carpet-bagger, or an
old-lino citizen ; but it is certain bis state
ments are remarkable. For cxamplo ;
Scarcely one-fourth of tho land in tho
Slate lias ever been tilled, and tho residue
now lies iu original forest, Kucli of it as
has boon Imp'roved, uveu by tlio almost
primitive system of agriculture heretofore
prevailing in South Carolina has yielded
crops which, in general compare favorably
with tlio most prolific hinds of tlio West,
and in tunny cases far surpass them In va

Over one hundred bushels of corn and six
ty bushels of wheat have, with ordinary
cultivation frequently been made to an
aero ill tills Btulo, nnd there are instances,
since the close of tho war whore, by good
ploughing and n moderate use of man

been gathered in the same area. Under
my personal observation two hundred nnd
twelve bushels worn made 011 0110 nciu,

Prior to 1800, our nverago harvest por
acre, according to tho official reports, was
six hundred pounds of cotton, twenty, five
bushels of corn, fifteen bushels of wheat
forty buthuls of barley, forty bushels of
rice, one hundred bushels of Irish aud
tkreo hundred Imshels of sweet potatoes
aud tliis despite tho carelessness of slave
labor, Hm luck of improved agricultural
implements, the parsimonious use of man
Ulus, mid many other disadvantugus of
similar character. .Since tlio close of tho
war tliis average lias been largely Increased
under tlm operation of tlm free labor sys

fertilizing agencies.
Our climate and soil nro adapted to H10
growth of tho most of tlio grain and fruits
of u more Northerly latitude, almost as
much sous to that of those which are 11a
turully found to prosper hero, and it lias
said with great truth, Hint there is senreo
ly n foot of land iu the wiioio domain of
South Carolina wliero a plant would not
flourish.
Wo cunnot shy that wo never rend or
