For the Herald.
THE FLIGHT OF THE MUSK*
O Muw». dear Mu«el come back I prav!
So long it sceins thou art away.
I miss thee so.* Thy ministry
Was always sweet and dear to me.
Tin u wert my betler-scli. All things
Were beautified by thee. Thy wings
Were folded gently and at rest
Then, like the bird, rriv heart the nest.
There thou didst sing in sweet, pure
tune
Like breeze and stream in golden June.
Hnch lair and mystic spell thou wrought
Upon each seene, each newborn thought.
Rut in some dark, unguarded time
Thv flight was wing'd to fairer clime
Tho* oe’r thine absence oft I sigh
And call thee hack with plaintive cry.
Thou hast not heard, nor wilt thou come
To make again m3' heart thy home.
<) Muse, dear Muse! inv friends know not
I am deserted and forgot!
My Muse appear’d. Her face and eves
Express’d a sad yet stern surprise:
“With common tilings my place is fill’d
The sweeter pulses that once thrill’d
To my gentle touch, thou hast still’d.
Thou art a menial. Thou dost make.
Ami plan, and toil, and sweep, and bake.
Thou niAkest garments coarse and
strong.
< That havy no pi aye in poet's song)
For laughing youths, who shout and
play.
And wear th v precious time away.
And many lonely vigils thou has kept
While all about thee peaceful slept.
Too weary thou to dre* 111 the dream
That weaves itseif iti poet’s theme.
Renounee these cares, and onee again
Come wander on the dewy plain.
Come seethe sun go down in glory.
The moon come up with silver story
All written out in shining i^irs
And set to music of the spheres.
Conic hear once more how brooks can
laugh.
And see again the grasses quaff
The sparkling dews of heav’n. The
llow’rs
Once more will talk of happy hours;
The ferns, the grass, the mossy nook,
The bubbling spring, t he pebbly brook.
Will whisper to thy spirit-ear
With voice thou loved so well to hear.
Thv l«»\ iug guide again I’ll be
My unheard songs I’ll sing to thee.”
Conceited.
A story is told of a young sopho
more, the newly-appointed editor of^
a college paper in Sew England,
who, on his way home in vacation,
some years ago, made the acquaint
ance of a quiet gentleman on a rail •
road train.
“Englishman, I perceive,” airily
began our college boy.
The strangei bowed.
“You must find much to amuse
vou in this country. We are so
crude, so new!” said the sophomore.
*-ho was an Anglo-maniac. “There
is one thing, however, on which I
flatter myself we compare favorably
with John Bull—our newspapers.
The journalists of this country rank
high, sir—high!”
Having received a civil reply he
•ontinued:
“I am myself an editor. Like to
look at a copy of our paper?” pull
ing out the small sheet from his
nocket. “Now you have no idea—
uoliody not in the profession can
have any idea—of tho labor and
mental strain involved in that small
sheet. Keep it. There may be a
paragraph or two in it that is worth
'•onsiderine, even if it does come
r rom this side of the water.”
H*s companion changed his place
soon afterward, and the amused
'•onductor, who had overheard the
•onversation, said to the young
man:
“Do you know who that was?”
“No.”
“It was Mr. Walter, of tiie London
Times.”
at work at the time and fully one-
third of this number would have
perished but for the presence of
mind of a little boy who was pres
ent when the wall gave way, and
who ran to the head of the works
and gave the alarm. Fortunately
no lives were lost, hut a number of
persons were considerably bruised.
It was with great difficulty that
some of them scrambled their way
out through the darkness and wa-1
ter, and the floating timbers that
reached to the top overhead. It will j
take about thirty days to remove}
the water and to re-open the works i

The Coal Creek mine (Tenn.) op

drowned out by the water filling

The trouble arose from driving an
entry too near a like entry driven
in an opposite direction from tiie

had passed the terminus of the lat

ly a thin wall of coal between them.
Above the wall in the old works a
large body of water had collected.
The pressure was so great that the
wall gave way and the water moved
into the mine and filled it up in a
very short time.
