•at out The lesson we ore n«*w to study is
the during part of the Revelation, and corre
sponds in some degree to the opening in Rev.
L 1-9. In both there ia a rapid and informal
passing from one point to another. V. 13 in
- - our lesson is a repetition of Rev. i, 8.
correspondence* will be pointed out as we
proceed. The teacher does not need so much
to linger over connect ions that are obscure as
to set out clearly the great and abiding
truths, about tbe meaning of which there is
no room for disemsion.
Vs. 8-9. In Rev. xxi, 9, “one of the seven
angels” said: “Como hither, I will show thee
the bride, the Lamb's wife.” At tbe end of
this vision tbe apostle was so overpowered
that he was ready to give worship to the
angel. This is not the only time when men
made the same mistake.. See the case of
Cornelius in Acts x, 25-#}. and the people of
Lystra, Acte xiv, 11-15. In the corrupt days
of Christendom tbe worship of angels became
a well established u*uge, contrary to tbe
word spoken here to John. Yet it might
have l>een thought that he was in no danger
of giving God's glory to another. Fellow
•en ants are never to get the honor due only
to God.
V. 10. The a|>ostle is directed to keep the
messaged now given him in such a way that
men may know them. The divine will was
a “seal**! book” In God’s hHnd till Jesus <aui6
and ojjeucd it, ns in Rev. v, 5-7. But this is
to be an unseakxl, oj>en look. The reason
gk»u is that “the time is at hand.’’ The
things in the look Were not remote, specula
tive, but affecting the thoughts and life of
prof.-ssing Christians then aud ever after.
Whatever prophecies might, need time to ex
plain them by their fulfillment, there are
very many statement* of plain, practical
truth for everyday life, und which nil aro to
read. Tbe epistles to the seven churches, for
example, wore appropriate for Christian
study from the l>eginnhig.
V. 11. There niv two “advents” of the Son
of Man in the Bible, the first in humiliation
to suffer, the second in glory to judge. But
in addition to these and without interfering
with them, God is often said to “comer* when
He inflict* judgments. And the day of death
i* practically to every nuin the day of judg
ment , for that clay will not reverse any d»».
oitioas made at death. Bee in illustration

teacher. Mint in life we aro set ting tbe seal of
diarwcter, tljut dentil will not alter it, that if
w* be uiigust tl>cii «h shall be so forever. See
1^ lxii, 12. No givater snare has ever been
laid Itefore men than the hope of another
“chance,” which the heart, deludes itaolf into
thinking if will then accept. “Now,” say?
God. “At a convenient season,” snys the
tinman soul (Acta xxiv, 25).
' • t2. The “quickly” refer* probably, not
*o much to nearness in time as to unexpected-
new*. Men aro so approached one by one; so
♦he world will l»o “at the last day.” For the
judgment is then universal—“fcvery man”—
•tid also-just—“according as his work shall
ba” Sec Rom. ii, ft, and xiv, 12.
V. 13. How important it is to remember
the divine nature and the infinite authority
of the Judge appears from tho repetition ben*
of the words in tho beginning (Rev. i, 8). f Bo
it ia in John i, 1. Jesus is one with tlx*
Father, and He is "the author and finisher of
our fuith” (Hob. xii, 2).
V. 14. The language of the llfb, 12th and
15th void's naturally loads to this, in which
the way of getting a right to tho tree of lib*
is aet forth. It is doing “His command
ment*.” Man was in tho Garden of Eden and
in innocence. Ho uto tho forbidden fruit.
Bo lie was expelled. He disobeyed God’s com
mands. (Boo (leu. iii, 24.) It is by revera-
Ing all this and obeying that, he can get tbe
right to the tree of lift*. (Bee Rev. ii, 7.)
Tie* figure of a city is here added in reference
V* *• xxi, 1«X The obeying is more than
mere saying or professing. See iu ir*iFtr»-
tiou Matt vii, 21. If one asks, “What com
mands are we to oU»y f tho answer is iu such
passage's as I John iii, 28; Acts xvi, 31. This
Jh the “obedience oi faith. (See the revised
version of v. 14.) ,. t
V. 15. Outside tbe Oriental city dogs live
on the filth of the place. Hence we can un
derstand the opening words, which hav© their
mooning continued in the black list that fol
low*. The climux is “loving and making a
lie.” See for other statements of tills awful
truth Phil, iii, 19; Gal. v, 19-21.
V. 10. Again the authority of this book is
•et forth, ns in Rev. i, 1, and with tbe figure
of {lev. v, 1, which in turn comes from Isa.
xi, 1, 10. The “star” is from Num. xxiV, 17.’
Then follows the glorious recital of tbe imi
tation
(V. 17), in explaining which the teacher
may begin with “the water of life.” What is
ft.f Tne figure comes probably from the other
familiar language, ns of Pa. xlii, 1-2: “My
soul thirsteth for Clod;” i. e., desires Him, as
the thirsty man desires water, and this is
• vateroflife. The soul that has this desire
J®, atiftfied has life. (See John iv, 13-14.) But
how can we get it? 8imply, come to the
fountain and take of it Believe in, coma to,
receive, Christ What encouragement have
we to do this? The Spirit bids us come (John
xvi, 13-14). All gospel invitationsoome under
this bead. Tha “bride” (see Rev. xxi, 9), Is tbe
church of Christ Her testimony in preach
ing, writing and living is to Christ a* the
Saviour. The individual member—“let him
that hoareth’*—Is exhorted to repeat it, as
converted, faithful Sabbath school teachers
do. And, finally, it is renewed again in this
di ine word: “Whosoever will,” etc..« One
might say: “I do uftt know'tfae Bible nor the
church, ncr have 11» Christian friend to teach
lue, but my soul thirsts for God.” Then let
each a one come. Jesus will not. cast him
-OUL but will receive him and put him in tbe
way ot lefifSixigT xi, 28-80.)

To add to it would imply its incompleteness.
To take from it would destroy ite perfect
