Mu._ Editoi::—While it can but be j
admitted just now that our political;
horizon sec-m3 . to smile more friendly
to our hitherto dejected and disap- j
pointed souis, nonone will-dare reply j
to the above question in the affitina- ■
tive, when it is an undeniable fact- that I
other and equally as great- obstacles lie
in the way of our future and perma
nent prosperity;. ' •• •
Whither are we drifting? Look
around and let the condition, of thc-
conhlry to-day answer tho question.—!
Look back- over the road we have been
traveling the past five years, and see
the wracks. Ask the men wholave
heen trying to run large plantations
with crowds of negroes to support in
laziness and theft, and what is then;
use? “Lost, lost, and almost
cl.” Look out at the sad eounte-
>s > and long - faces of those who
seemed bright with smiles and
happy with easy minds.
What is the cause of all this? Ask
our own silent thoughts the question,
and- what is the reply? A sigh is the
only answer, with, perhaps, a smotli-
•-ivd imprecation, “Lool that I have"
boon!” ! ; . ; ',..
Who is to blame for this dearth or
jirc siralion in the land? Will any one
pretend to claim that we, the farmers,
me not responsible for the whole of it,
that our folly, fa!se pride, indiscretion
and misdirection have not brought it
nr on oiir- shohfders?. Let him speak
who will,-for we-are all deeply, serious
ly and sorrowfully in the matter.
Yet by our actions, we virtually ack
nowledge lo.liave been, running under
a sound and systematic policy, for in
stead of turning oyer; a new leaf, as our
better judgment and past experience
most rigidly dictate, we have-'turned
up the. same old page again, already-so
. full of blots defaeings, failiure accounts
etc., and propose to work out a net
dividend, right or wrong.
