It took a premium at the last State Fair, but has never ap peared in print before.] Doubtless those who have become skilled-in fte art, after long yeara of practice, will think that.a young house keeper’s experience is too limited to be heard on so important a subject, and that she can tell them nothing about which they are not already in formed. Of course, to write for this class would be superfluous. Admitting that my experience is not very lengthy, nevertheless, I imagine that I'can give a'few items of practical infoimation upon the subject that maybe useful to those who have commended the ardu- ourtaak without tee necessary knowl edge to-perform its, duties. ’ Possibly, during their' girlhood,' they may have learned to apply the broom to its legit imate use, may have occasionally “car ried the keys,” given out meals, seen that the table was properly arranged, and may vainly imagine that they pos sess all the knowledge of Mfcuso keep ing that will be strictly requisite.'’ Of the amount of food necessary to be prepared for a given number of per sons, of the length of time required in cooking various dishes, and of the best and most economical use of their supplies, they are totally ignorant In the present state of affairs, this information is of primary importance, not only from the difficulty of procur ing good honest servants, but also from the uncertainty of freed labor, rendering it often necessary for us to do our own house-work. Every lady, it matters not what her circumstances are, should endeavor to learn every thing connected with. house-keeping. Should her means permit her to keep servants, she would be saved from the frauds and impositions that -they so frequently practice upon the inexperi enced; and should her husband’s in come not admit of this, - should hc fail In the early history of Scotland and j Ireland, a tribe of Celtic warriors Cold bread can also he stlnd fortl » pre-eminvut by their bold -adventures and warlike deedi - Tho scenes of their exploits received names still perpetuated ia the topography of both, countries, and the exploits themselves became the theme of many poems, and romances. ^ Finn Mae Cumhail (pronounced Coole) was one of these wurriors, and their moat famous commander. According to Irish an- w:ts his renown that these Gaelic war riors, who had previously ItoOTri desig nated by various names,-bttfbarrius to onr English ears, were henceforth known aaFeinne, Fiaunn, or Fenians; and as such were celebrated in the logendary history of Scotland and Ire land. They seem eventually to have constitfited a kind of established mili tia,-whose duty it was, -in the words of ah old historian, “to' defend tlie fconn-* try against foreign or domestic cae- mies, to support the right and succes sion of their kings, and to be ready -upon the shortest notice for any sur prise or emergency of the state.” These meagre’historical details give one litUcidea of tho amOunt’dTFenian literature which still exists in : aifcient Gaelic manuscripts, One of its'mast accurate and learned students r has Why poems and legends published, •'they would fill throe thousand I «3bs*-ly printed large quarto pages. To enter the ancient Fenian order, “every soldier must sWea^thttfc without regard to fortune he would choose a wife fori her virtue,: her-courtesy?! ami good: maners; that he would fieveri of fer violence to a woman; that as far us heconld he . would relievo* the' ^oor; and. that he would not refuse trifight nine men of any other nation. - Every soldier must be well acquainted-with twelve hooks of poetry, and be ahls to compose verses: He must also run well, and defend- himself when in flight. To toy his activity, Jme was made to run through a wood, having a tree’s breadth, and the whole of the Feninns panning him;. if-howatoovt - taken or wounded in the wood lie was refused, as too, sluggish and unskillful to fight with honor among such valiant troops. He must be so swift and light of foot os not to break a rotten stick by standing on it;, able also to leap over a tree' as high. us his forehead, and to stoop under a tree that was lower than his knees. Without- stopping or less ening his speed, he must; be able to draw a thorn out of his foot Final ly, he must takesn oath of fideli ty.” These are some , of the qualifications given to as by un ancient historian, who naively adds:—“So long as these forms of admission were exactly in sisted upon, the militia of Deland were an invincible defence to their country, and s terror to rebels at htfine and en emies abroad.” What would become. of ofir modem Fenians were such qualifications now required?—Prof. Seelye, in Scribner’s Monthly for March. A farmer’s wife, in speaking ol the - smartness of her son, a lad six years old, said: “He can read fluently, re tire whole catechism - and weed onions as well as hia -father.” “res, mother,” added the young hopeful, “and yesterday I licked Ned ftawson, throwed the cat- in the well, and stole u any- body had nut Christopher Columbus in the middle of the Atlantic, snd told him that he was in the act of dia- an the gone there.
