THURSDAY MORNING,
“Sire, - ” said he, “this dream of the
Prince Imperial is a strange confirma
tion of my diagnosis. But it is on
scientific grounds and experience alone
that I have my opinion.”
“Dr. Nelaton,” returned the Ernper-

assume all the responsibility of the op
eration?” .
"Unqnestionably, sire.”
“Then perform the operation.” -
When all was ready, chloroform was
given to the Prince. As soon as in
sensibility was complete, Dr. Nelaton
began incisions. . He was perfectly
calm, and handled his knife with all
his usual skill. The Emperor was very
pale, and,' turning to the window,
drummed on its panes With his nervous
fingers.
“I have great-confidence in Dr. Nel
aton, but the -risk is beyond estima

' Dr.. Nelaton’s knife drew- near the
thigh-joint, and one of the surgeons
present exclaimed:
“Ah! yon see thereis no abscess.” _
, The -Emperor’s face, became of a
deathly'hue.- He turned suddenly,
and involuntarily laid his hand on Dr.
Nelaton’s arm, as if to entreat him to
wantonly mangle his son no more.—
The doctor gently- put aside' the Em
peror’s hand, and without losing in the ;
least degree his calmness, said:

As he spoke, he thrust, with a sure,
steady hand, his knife deep into the
tliigk, nnd as be withdrew it, the pus
flowed out. The Prince-Imperial was
saved, and Dr. Nelaton had achieved
one of the greatest triumphs of his
life.
“Doctor,” 'said the Emperor, in a
voice full of emotion, “I offer homage
to your great genius:”
“Sire,-your words will make it im

. At this moment the Prince again be
came conscious,'and his first words
were: - '
“Papa, I had that same dream.”
“My son, it has’ proved a true one.
The scat -of disease - has been found-
where Dr. Ndirton and your dream
foretold it would be.” ^
The Prince had borne himself with
great firmness throughout. His pres
ence of mind and self-control were as-
toiiisLing in one so young. He now
turned his pale countenance to the
doctor, and thanked him in-words o!
politeness and loving regard;
It may be of- interest to mention
that the Prince Imperial was bora
March 1G, 1856, and is therefore fifteen
years of age. His hair is nearly black,

Dr. Nelaton, was summoned in consul

was alone in his opiinion. His argu

The decision of "the proper course tc-

consultation was adjourned until the

Hence he'turned to the-lit tie. sufferer,

“Is it possible!” said the Emperor.

“My son,” said the. Emperor, .“tins
