LED AFTER GETTYSBURG,
The ChnrleatM^fc^'w aTatedateJ; ,
draws a most gibciry picture of the'
financial future of unhappy South
Carolina. Completely under; the hepj
ox the brutal gang of barbarian blacks
and their tools and' allies—a few infa
mous whites—the tax payers of the
State, without representation in the
Legislature,’ and their property com
pletely at the mercy of these thieves,
are on the brink of ixtter and irremeadi-
ble ruin. The News states the ease as
follows:.
In 1358, when the expenses of the
State Government was less than $500,-
000, . the property of the- whites was
valued (and the estimate - was ridicu
lously low) at no less than $1S9,000,-
010 in gold. Now the real and per
sonal estate is valued, for taxation, at
a far higher price than it would bring
at a public sale, and yet it'is only set
down at $183,000,GOO in currency.—
The value of property is thus reduced'
from $500,000,000 to $183,000,000,
but the taxes-are increased from $500,
000, ihl858, to $-1,000,000 for 1871.—
The. State and coanty taxes for both
1S70 and 1871. areinnde- payable du
ring tlie present year. It is plain,
therefore, that the taxation is increased
nearly ten-fold, while the basis is .the
question in a nut-'shgllrT J ,
Can the people—the unrepresented
whites—pay the taxes levied upon
them?' Itis not a matter of expedien
cy or policy. It'is aot-nsr-bpen qu^s-
