CARL SHURZ-
Look at him in -what light we may,
Catl Shnrz is a remarkable man. His
career in the old world was remarka
ble, and his life here, in his adopted
•home has been equally so. Fifteen
years ago he was unable to speak oar
language. Now he uses better Eng
lish than ninety-nine out of eveiy hun
dred of our public men, and his words
are chosen with a wonderful nicety.
As a debaterhe has ho equal in the
Senate. If his earefully-prepared
speeches are great, his extempore ad-
I dresses are wonderful for their display
of ready learning. What Sumner
draws frbmhis library, Shnrz holds in
his memory. His familiarity with the
classics, with history, ancient and
modern, with Shakespeare and the
deep thinkers' of the past and present,
enables him to overcome with ease the
onslaughts of his less learned oppo
nents. I shall never, forget the day
that Morton, Howe, Frelingliuysen

whence flowed the water and the blood

lies the power of his inimitable lyric.
Wesley's more exuberant fancy flits
from figure to figure, and by so doing
weakens his hymn which notwithstand
ing, is one "of the very bestin our lan

be the songs of imperfect, sinful, dying
men on earth, what must be the gran?

just made perfect in heaven.

of fee noblest and most imperishable
hymns in our language attest this fact
I allude to “Bock of Ages, ” by Augus
tus Toplady, and “Jesus Lover of my
Soul,” by Charles Wesley. These
distinguished men, as is well known,
were leaders of the two great schools in
the' Protestant world known as Cal
vinists and Arminians. Both were
zealous in the support and defence of
■their respective views, and both'abun
dant and successful in their labors to
win souls to;Christ" '■• •• ; '*•' -
. They were contemporaries and in
the midst of their labors just about a
hundred years ago. It is'said that they

much earnestness and warmth' the the

their own .homes, each composed a
hymn—Toplady’a soul gushed out in
the sublime strains of his magnificent
lyric, Wesley’s, in the- grandest arid
most melting verses to which his fine
genius ever attained.•" They differed
in debate; let us see how they flowed
together in song. At the same time
we - may judge in what excellent spirit
they must have debated.
Let Wesley speak first:

Now hear Toplady sing:
“Rock of ages, cleft for me,
Handsomest Stocks
Let me hide myself in thee;
Let the water and theblood -
From thy wounded side which flowed;
Unparalleled Suffering!
Be of sin the double cure,
Cleanse me from its guilt and power.”
Both these stanzas are fitted to ex
press the highest, devotion to which
Christians may hope to attain cn earth,
and both are still sung with tears- and
penitence, hope and joy by both Cal
vinists and Arminians a century after
Wesley’s ransomed spirit flew to the
bosom'of Jesus, whom he loved so ar
dently and served so faithfully, and
Toplady had “soared to worlds un
known.” Yet they differed a little,
and that is characteristic of their res-
dective schools to this day. The Cal
vinist yearns for holiness, the Armin-
ian r or heaven.
Let us hear Wesley again:
“Other refuge have I none
Hangs my helpless soul on thee;
Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
Still support and comfort me;

of his second stanza. Hear "him:

Could my tears forever flow
All for sin could not atone,
Thou must salve, and thou alone.”
There is I bnt a shade of difference

as that already noticed. The cry of
the Calvinist is still for righteousness,
for salvation from sin, while that oi
theArminian is. for support, comfort
