dumof was made for the machines of I
Whitney and Miller, the manufacturers
found themselves too painfully em
barrassed to satisfy the public de
mand.
Clouds continued to lower around
the horizon of this new enterprise.—
At one time Mr. Whitney was 'strick
en with a lingering illness, which pre
cluded the possibility of his doing
anything; and on another occasion his
employes were the -victims to a
epidemic, which occurred just ns the
first crop was being harvested for the
machines; and in the ensuing year, the
shop containing his macliinery and
papers, were destroyed by fire. All
these disasters, taking place in quick
.succession, and at a time when the in-
crewed culture of the staple made the
machine an absolute necessity, and Mr
Whitney finding it impossible to meet
the emergency, g, rival machine was

which the substitution of a circular

Whitney, was an improvement made
by Nathan Lyons; and when we con

half its honors. As we have stated,
the machine at that time was kept con
