HOUSTOM HOKE JOURNAL
J. T. WATERMAN
The glory which .we deemed imper-
; ishable has departed from the Sonih-
j ern Cross, and it is named in song—
: “The Conquered Banner.” Life’s
1 fairest hopes are dead—love’s rarest
I jewels are kept in these earthen cas-
• kets. A chalice brimmed with bitter-
I ness is pressed to our lips, and help-
j lessness submits to drink the dregs of
; rue.
But thank God, not all is lost! This
| consecrated day is ours, and it cannot
tlbe separated from oiir love forever.—
These most precious graves are ours—
;the graves of those who “wore the
grey.” Some here—some yonder—
son alas, we know not where. Per
haps the. wild flowers “swing their
censers and, waft- their oders” near
them. The spring time brings ns
beautiful flowers, and with these we
decorate the graves of our soldiers,'—
The fountains of-the heart supply us
with pure tears, and with these we
embalm their memory. We have too
this glorious music, under whose blest
inspiration, hope once more lifts her
radiant wings—but looks beyond the
river . .
To that happier "by tmd by, when we shall stand
Ort time’s remotest shore,
And these shall greet us from the golden strand
Of the blissful evermore
And beckon our spirits o'er.

ADDIffiSS OF J. T. WATEKUAif.
We have come here to pay tribute,
to the memory of one dead. The voice
f man is not needed to add to the so
lemnity of this occasion. In the sweet
tranquility of this scene, there is an
eloquence which makes my voice sound
harsh in comparison. In the benig
nant sky which bends oyer us; in the
genial sunlight which spreads its sil
very waves about us; in the leaves
which sigh and whisper above onr
neads; in yonder patient stream which
goes murmuring to its death in the
sea; in the green earth on whose breast
onr dead are laid—Nature speaks, and
says to our throbbing hearts: “Be still;
I keep my dead. In my arms, they
rest; i, is well with them.”
And our hearts are stilled, and we
say to the earth: “Shield them well,
O tender Mother; keep their form-
where the fetters of tyranny cannot
find them.'”- And to the heavens.
“Bend in pity-over their resting plac
es; bid your showers and dews weep
for them; send your generous sunshine
co dispel the darkness which would en
shroud them, and to wake to life and
beauty the violet and the daisy and the
green grass that deck their graves.—
And yon, ye trembling leaves, whisper
gently to the' winds the-sad story oi
.heir sufferings and their. falL And
.hou, O stream, chant in thy ceaseless '
murmurs a mournful requiem to those
who sleep on thy banks. ” They sleep
oh the bosom of their Mother Earth—
it-is weff wi.h them.
What, though no stately column.
Their cherished names may raise, -
To dan the eye and move toe lip
Wnfa gratitude and praise^-
The blu e sky, hung ryitii bannered clouds,
Their solemn dome shati.be,;
All.Heaven’s choiring winds shall .chant
•The anthem jot the lreei'
The Spring, frith vine-leafed arms .shall
- emsp ‘ '
Their nillocked resting places,
And summer roses croup above;..
.With IhLhal and dewy faces: .
Fair daisies, riiyed and crowned, shall

These whispered words were hut scarcely spoke
Ere missiles of death were sped
from boyish hands, with a telling stroke.
And tue Yankees turned and fled!
Tho wounded man by a rotten log—
Tne.r comrade Bhotat bis post— '
They left to die like a wounded dog.
And iprgot tneu’ evening’s boast!.
The boast to “bum the village there;
To leave not a brick unturned
They laughed while thinking of our despair,
At seeing our homesteads burned!
The morning came, and save here and there
A knapsack or sword belt lay,-
We bad not known where the. Yankees were.
Or whither they took their way.
A woman’s wit, and those stripling boys.
Their boasted purpose had marred;
3 he made thunk wlien'.tiiey heard tlu3 noise
Of firing, -twas Forrest’s Guardi
‘What boots it now?” has somebody said;
“They conquered our land at last;
For freedom’s hopes and her visions dead
Are buried with the past.
“What is it now what our women did,
Or boys who forgut their mimes ?”
Ah ! something bright.for the South lies hid,
Perhaps, in the future times 1
