Over a wasted life:
O’er sens committed while conscience slept;
Promises made but never kept;
Folly, and shame, and strife;
Nothing but leaves. - ■ _

“No.-Night There. ”
A little boy named Knight;. who re- I hu directed the letters,
centlj entered the mission school of jilary Todd,” tlie other
New London, was told by the teachers
that be most be a good boy, and when
be died be would go to heaven! The
little boy was well pleased with the
prospect, and promised to be the best
kind of a boy. The nest Sunday he
appeared in his place, looking sorrow
ful, and the teacher asked him if he bad
beed a good boy.
Nothing but leaves! Sad memory weaves __
No veil to hide the past;
And ns we trace our weary way,
Counting each lost and misspent day,
Sadly we find at last
Nothing but leaves.
Ah! who shall thus the.JIoster meet,
Bearing but withered leaves? 1
Ah! who shall at the Saviour’s feet,
Before the awful judgment seat,
Lay down for golden sheaves

We have watched the dying day,
when there has streamed thro’ the

would lead us out to. aii,Etein.aU)ay.—
When pain’s furnace was hot within
us, did not our Father’s breath fan the
flame? did not one-loving hand clasp
ours, while with the other He molded
our hearts to His will, fitting us to
dwell with Him, where no night of
sadness will wring the brcisi wtQi an
guish, where no'clouds will ever shade

troubled sleep, from which the weary
wake to weep? Has He not said,
“When thou passest thro’the .w

them all quivering upon the heated

Our Father wounds that He may heal

Perhaps He has some labor of loye

The Best Teachers always Learn
ers.—It is a true word in theology,
tint those who think they know any
thing—know really nothing. For .hi
who truly hears and learns God’s
Word, can never wonder at it enough,
or learn it to the bottom. Let every
one humble himself and remain a.learn-
er therein.—Luther.
Humbleness of mind is gained more
by believing in Christ than by dwell
ing upon our sins. When we'.see the
“King in His beauty,” we have little
desire to behold our own deformity!
The seemingly unimportant events
of life succeed one another as the
snow gathers together; so are oar
habits formed. A single flake pro
duces no material change; but as the
tempest burls the avalanche down the
mountain, and overwhelms the inhabi
tant and his habitation, so passion,
acting upon the element of mischief,
which pernicious habits have brought
together by imperceptible accumula
tions, overthrows the edifice of truth
and virtue.—Jeremy Bentham.
Bad thought’s a thief; he acts his part;
Creeps through the windows of the heart;
And if he once his way can win,
Eo lets a hundred robbers in.
Every parent is like a looking glass

wearers,lias thoroughly demonstrated the strength
steadiness, durability and accuracy of the Wal
tham Watch. To satisfy that class in all these re
spects, is to decide tne question as to the real val
ue of these time-keepers.
More than 500,000 of these watches are now
speaking for themselves In the pockets of the peo-
of their superiority
The superior organization. and great extent of
the Company’s works at AYaltham, enables them to
produce watches at a price whi renders compc
Ltion futile, and those who buy any other watch
merely pay -from 25 to 50 per cent more for their
watches than is necessary.
These time-pieces combine every improvement
that a long experience has proved of real practical
use. Having had : the-refusal c«£ nearly eyery in
vention in watchmaking, originating thin country
or in Europe, only those were finally adopted
which severe testing by the most skillful artisans
in our works, and long use on the part Of the pub
lic demonstrated to beeasetial to correct and en
during, time-keeping.
Among the many improvements wc would par
ticularize r - ;’
The invention and use of a centre-pinioil of pe
culiar construction, to prevent damage to the
train by the breakage of main-springs, is original
with the American Watch Company, who havf

are used in all grades of Waltham Watehes.
