A gentleman from- the neighborhood of Grimes county, some fire miles from Sarasota, where the saddest oc currence . which we believe we tiave ever recorded took place, on last Sat-; urday night, gives some particulars : addition;;! to those which have already been published. We refer to the ac cidental killing of his wife by Briggs Goodrich; a kind husband, as we leam, and a sober,, iucktstrious andl respected citizen. There, were, it seeins, several- n>&- bersiu the.house, and Airs, Goodrich.- hearing them, had aroused her" hus band, and he (not bcisg: able- to finc£ Ms pistol) had taken, a bowie-knife and was in pursuit of the thieves. He had struck at one .of them, ami another had passed him iu.-ide of the honse r and. he seems to have hastened out side and around to the window of his- own bed-room, which he knew to be hoisted; with the expectation of inters cepting.tlw escape of some of the bur- . glars.- . . . .It is said that chloroform had been nsed by the thieves, but not sufficient ly to produce stupefaction. Yet it fcr- likely that the feeling of fainfnesa' caused by the inhalation of thecliloro- fonn induced Mrs. Goodrich to rise> from the bed where she had been left by her husband, amigo to The window :for air. -There she .was- found by her excited husband, and, as the night was; so dark that-he conhl discern only the outlines of .thefignpe, he naturally imagined he; saw oue; o{ the-- robljeis- -abont to pass oat throughthe. window- Then came blown, bearing all that the- human mind can. conceive of the ter rible—blows by which a husband took the .life .of his own wife with the knife. WeJetum that he-is distracted*, and- cannot .be trusted .alone, hat is guarded, constantly tp prevent the ednt- mission of suicide. Mrs- Goodrich is represented as a very accomplished, and noble woman, and it is said that she died with words of sympathy for- her unfortunate husband upon her lips. In the utter consternation and: desola tion. winch followed th*’ terrible trage dy, we.are informed that the only child, of the mandage,, which is still almost an infant,'was seen pillowed upon the slain mother’s breast, begging her to* awake and grant it irn evidence of rec ognition.—Houston \Texas) Union BY J. He only fell into the very com mon error of speaking of the -‘‘Federal Government” as a “National Govern ment ” \ .' ' - The right of secession for all-prac tical purposes was, 1 as we understand, decided-by the war; not that war can esver. settle or decide any principle of truth in matters of government or jus tice between ihen or States, any more than in matters of science, art" or reli gion. War may decide, and may de termine permanently, questions of pol icy, "but never questions of right. A legitimate result of the kite .war, we believe, -was the "settlement—and settlement forever-bin this country, of. the policy of Secession as a practical mode of redress against, any usurpa tions on the part" of the Federal Gov ernment. On this alone,- we are willing to unite with all friends of liberty in all the States of the Union, in the com ing contest to put out of power those who have the present control of the Federal Government, and who have so wickedly abused their high trusts— whose progress, if not arrested, will end inevitably in despotism. If the battle be pitched npon tiiis; ground alone, with no soft words for usurpations of any sort, there will be no need of “levies.” Volioiteers of their own accord,- when the signal is given, will pour forth from every "quar ter with that enthusiasm for the cause, which love of liberty ever inspires/ -and which, in popular elections, -is ever the surest “earnest Of victory.” •saaTvau asv sisiooiiau ,’i . t .. .. >Hb_s A,r-\ •j.-iajig rD aiunipa 1C !■<■?
